Felicia SPI to MPI

Featured Replies

Has anyone ever done an MPI conversion on a SPI felicia as i know where i can get a MPI unit from but i'm not sure how easy the job will be and if there has to be anything else done (i.e ECU update) . any help will be great

Thanks

I'm certainly no mechanic, and this maybe totally wrong...

However, I looked into this when I had a Favorit, and think you need an ECU, injectors and cylinder head from an MPi to do this, and for the realtively small gain, probably not worth it.

The difference in engines is not just the injection IIRC, I think the compression ratio is different - the pistons from the MPi would be needed also.

Hopefully someone will be along to clear this up, or indeed make me look silly!

ok, i found out that an MPI conversion is a lot more work than i thought. the wiring loom, manifold and possibly ECU would need to be changed in order to carry it out.

Another question i have is:

Does anyone know how to fit an induction kit onto a SPI engine. I know it is a lot easier on th MPI version as it is a direct replacement for the air filter but on the SPI engine, the air filter is in the casing with the airbox directing air to it. do i need to remove the air filter and airbox when fitting an induction kit? any help would be appreciated

P.S. would a direct replacement performance air filter have any advantages over an induction kit

IIRC The SPI and MPI air boxes and filters are identical.

The only benefit of any induction kit/air filter on such an engine would be very tiny indeed. It would however give a little more noise, like a growl. Which can be nice ;)

The airbox is different, the SPI has a round airbox on the top. looks much more like a carb airbox as the SPI unit is basically an electronic carb.

Right heres a few bit of info, for the MPI conversion you need the loom ecu, injection manifold, dizzy replacement bit, fuelpump. All of this can be obtained easily enough. You dont NEED the cylinder head, but I would recommend one as it has far better flow than the spi head.

The MPI cylinder head is worth considering as a upgrade regardless of whether or not you use the mpi injection.

A few things to bear in mind the 136b SPI engine makes 67hp the MPI versions makes 68.

On the induction side, the standard airbox is well designed to enhance torque across the range, you can purchase a replacement K+N element to go in the original box which will help a bit, if your engine spends a lot of time revving out then replaceing the original airbox with a pancake type filter will give a noticeable top end gain at the cost of a similiar noticeable reduction across the rest of the range. If you want to go down this route the nove 1.3sr filter can be modified to fit nicely.

For a easy hike in power a cat replacement pipe and reworking the exhaust to a single efficent back box system is very worthwhile, a cat replacement pipe alone WILL give 10% more power without any other modifications. Ive done back to back tests on this on the rolling road, and the skoda figures for cars with and without cats of the same models back this up.

The problem with any tuning on these cars is alway going to be the adjustment of fuelling, remember the standard injectors will only cope with about 25% more power than standard. And finding someone to reprogram the ecu is tricky at best. The intake can also be replaced, the bosch monomotronic system is used on many cars I believe certain seat cupras used a larger version which is plug compatible. I havent tested this as yet to make sure it works. But visually its the same system plugs etc.

Beyond these modifications you get into the realm of "real" modifcations such as head work and custom cams, thats when you start making respectable power.

Thanks for the advice it has helped a lot, i reckon the back box is the next job as my old one is starting to fall apart, then maybe an induction kit. converting to MPI is not worth the time or money especially if it is only a 1bhp increase. cheers guys
