Hello there, I know that the topic is discussed more that five times, but I still haven't found any solution. The story goes like this:  The temp indicator light is comming up for about a year (when I bought the car (used)) and I let it be since there was no problem with the car and I thought that It might be a faulty sensor. The temperature gauge was working just fine, the coolant level was ok, so no problem. I would let it so, but I have to get my car checked to get this 2-year valid stamp that my car is 100% ok and with a light blinking they will not allow it.

 

Anyway, after changing the timing belt (the DIY guide was very helpful), the light stopped blinking for about two days but then came again. Ok, faulty coolant level sensor I thought and I shorted it. The light came up again but not always (I would say a 70 to 80%). Ok then, Faulty temperature sensor. I changed it and I had no light comming for... 3 days... :wall:   It started again (with the coolant level sensor shorted) and I do not know what is left to do. I do not know if it is a coincidence, but when I open the coolant expansion tank cap, the light goes off for a day/ half a day and when draining the system (as in timing belt and temp sensor change) the light goes off for a little more (2-3 days)!

 

any ideas? Draining the system, putting everything back and drive to the test area would be a so possibility, if it works this way for a while, but I wouldn't like to do so.

This may not be your issue, but when I had a similar problem, I found this broke wire in the engine bay ....

Once I fixed this I had no more light come on.

This would make sense. I'll give it a try this evening if I have enough time and I will post back. Thanks.

would these fault code scanners give more information about a temp light or they read only ABS/engine etc errors?

I popped round to see a mate with vcds, mentioned my issue and he pointed that out within seconds.

If it is that, it's a fairly easy and quick fix, about 10 mins to bridge/fix the wire. I've put a plastic bit of tubing around these wires now incase another mechanic leans on the vacuum box so it shouldn't happen again.

TBH he didn't read or point out any codes as he knew immediately what my problem was so can't say mate, sorry.

You're right, this is a 10 min repair, so if it is a broken cable in my case I wouldn't be a problem at all. I was just wondering in case that the cable seems to be ok, if a vcds could read the error.

Back with more news. Even that there was no visual cable cut, it is (should be) one. I noticed a sharp edge in the cables so, since there wasn't anything left, I cut the cables, connected them together and... tataaa! light went off! :thumbup:

It is the second ride I have made and up to now, everything is working fine. So, I took the sensor with the remaining cables to check it. I left it shorted as It was and I checked the connection between the two cables. The result is that it was shorted as it should be BUT, when I was moving around the cables the continuity was lost! So that means that it should be some error in the cables (yellow circle in the picture) or more likely in the cable that goes to the sensor (red circle). In any case, I'll let it as it is for the time being, put back the sensor and cover it in order to look nice and if I am on the mood to fix it I'll do it.

So problem solved I would say and I hope It will stay off this time. If there is no problem I would like to test it another 2-3 days before I press the "problem solved" button.

The damn light came up again yesterday. It seems that when I make a change, it stays off for two days and the third starts blinking.

Does anyone knows how to disconnect the light from the dashboard?

Final update for this issue. I removed the dashboard to check if i could temporarily remove the light (for the MOT test) but as it was LEDs inside I just let it as it was. I put the dashboard back in place and everything was working fine! Shorted coolant sensor cables - light off, open cables Light on! It seems that it was a dashboard or connection problem.

Since I got the MTO test an hour ago and everything was perfect, I would say problem solved (even if it starts blinking again!)
