Noise after fuel pump primes

Featured Replies

As above the pump (pretty much brand new) does its thing when I turn the key but since yesterday it sometimes makes another noise like a grinding or groaning noise.

Any ideas ??

Check your fuel pressure reg is ok.

Well a full tank seemed to quieten it down, I was on fumes to be honest. Although i have always run on fumes and none of my various pumps have made that noise before.

But .... I just swapped some injectors round and when I pulled out the FPR the gauze bit was hanging off, I don't know if that was like it already or I caught it when removing it just now.

I doubt that would effect it in anyway as its just a filter of sorts.

Anyhoo I had two spares so no issue really !!

You say the pump 'does it's thing' when you turn the key?

But - these are designed so that when you open the driver's side door on entry, i.e. before you've put the key in the ignition - that the ECU primes the fuel pump when you do so.

For example - I unlock mine, open the driver's door, and immediately hear the fuel pump go 'wheeeee - click' for about 3 seconds.

Does yours not do this? If not, then could be a faulty door microswitch, and hence possibly causing the issue maybe?

I would suggest that poor running  is nothing to do with a door micro switch but more to do with either the pump starting to die and or the FPR / injector  being restricted. As the car drives then the fuel is being primed ok, or at least past the point the door trigger happens.

I changed 3 pumps.going from a intank Walbro, std pump and LCR pump, injector rail, FPR , injectors  due to this and never really got which combination or part was the culprit, but fixed now. Maybe a bad batch of petrol.

Yeah the door switch is knackered so it only primes off the key at the moment.

It was doing the prime then making the noise, Mark what was doing that made you change all those bits ???

very poor running low speed and not under load buddy.

like a bad hesitation.

i did a injector wire tuck prior and extended injector wires and thought this caused it due to bad connections.

Then I run pump very low one day and a truck load of tank sediment was blown though fuel system, so much so that i thought i put diesel in tank...lol

lucky for me I had all those parts i mentioned spares so did not cost me much at all.

God knows what was the real issue was as  stupidly i swapped a load of stuff at once

Ah right I remember now.

The noise is back on 3/4 of a tank and I now have the added bonus of a strong smell of petrol in the car particularly in the boot.

I can't help thinking this all related to my issues through the year

Blocked tank vent ?

School boy error on the petrol smell.

The gloves I had on whilst swapping the injectors somehow ended up in the boot.... doh

Hasn't made the noise since. I'll keep observing for now
