ignition wires

Featured Replies

Right sorry the title was a bit vague, but I want to install some daylight running lights (I know some people don't like them but I do) I had some on my a3 which I wired into sidelight wiring but I want these on my vrs to come on with ignition and go off with ignition. Gotta be some wiring to battery or something any advice and help or even a link to a guide would be good, cheers.

A little side note I have found all the users on this forum very knowledgeable and helpfull keep up the good work

UK law says: "DRLs must switch on with the vehicle ignition and switch off when the vehicle sidelights are switched on. They can also be made to function as front position (side) lights, which operate at a reduced intensity when the vehicle sidelights are switched on."

The AA web site says:

"Retrofitting

The requirement to fit daytime running lights applies to new cars only.  There is no requirement to retrofit daytime running lights but kits are available if you wish to do so.  Lights approved to the appropriate EU legislation will have an approval mark on the lamp which includes the letters 'RL'.

Retrofitted daytime running lights should be installed so that they come on with the engine and go off when other lights are turned on.  Manually operated daytime running lights must be turned off at night to avoid dazzling other road users."

It would seem that  you need a bit of logic inside the light circuit (and relays) to decide when the lights should be on,off or dimmed.

Some car manufactures also dim the DRL adjacent to a flashing indicator light when it is flashing but I don't know whether this is in UK Law.

Apparently there is a spare terminal in back of headlight switch that is live in position 0,

Ideal for wiring drl's into

I may have to look in the headlight switch and see what happens

You could wire them to ignition relay just under the dash below the steering wheel, this is activated when the ignition is turned on

That could be an option, if there's no way of wiring them in the engine bay. What's the easiest way to run cables through the bulk head? I also want to run a power cable for amp. Will it be similar to my old a3 ( by pollen filter) easily done with glovebox out. Well it was on the a3.
