Kenwood DNX521DAB

Featured Replies

Hi All,

Wondered if anyone can help me with this query please? When I purchased my car a couple of months ago I had the Kenwood DAB stereo installed (by the main dealer). When I increase / decrease the temperature controls it shows exactly the same reading for both passenger side and driver's side, even when clearly there is a difference in temperature. I know that the climate control in the car itself is working because if I set the driver's side to 24C and the passenger side to 16C they are both working correctly. However, the Kenwood display only shows the driver's side temperature of 24C for both sides, which is not correct as it should show 16C for the left side.

Does anyone know if this is a design fault on the Kenwood unit or is it a wiring issue when installed? Or is it likely to be a faulty unit? Thanks.

The car is a 2011 model.

Hmm, not sure then. Speak to the dealer first.

I've spoken to the dealer, but they said they don't know if this model is able to display different temperatures at the same time - as they have not fitted many of these units! They say they are waiting for Kenwood to respond to them, however it has been over a week already. It may be that they are correct, however it would be kind of nice to know if my unit is faulty or not while it is still under guarantee!

Have you downloaded the latest firmware for the unit from the Kenwood site?

I had this unit fitted to my new Octavia by the main dealer last November. I just checked and like Lombardy's the temp graphic only responds to the drivers side setting. To be honest I had never noticed before.

I have the Kenwood will take a look tomorrow. Must say tbh it is something I have not taken any notice of.

Richard46 - I'm glad I'm not the only one to have this happen! I've spoken to the main dealer again today and they are still trying to get a response from Kenwood. I also downloaded the update from the Kenwood website but that didn't make any difference. It may be that it is not capable of showing two different settings, in which case I can live with it as its not the end of the world. However, at the end of the day I'm just curious to know one way or the other.

Would be interested to hear if you get an explanation although like you just curious.

Hi

I can confirm mine is the same.

Had wife's side on 20 and set my side to 22, it shows 22 on the kenwood display for both sides.

Perhaps Kenwood aren't aware of this bug - might be worth seeing if there is an email address to report it to.

I assume that this is not the case with the standard bolero unit and that it shows individual temperatures correctly?

Those who have the unit - do you guys know if Kenwood ever fixed the inability to use factory fitted microphone in light cluster with DNX521DAB. Basically my car is already wired with microphone for the factory bluetooth setup and it would be ridiculous to rip it out half the interior to remove factory microphone just to then replace it with Kenwood one. I understand same goes for MDI connection, becoming useless when DNX521DAB goes in, but that concern me slightly less than the mic.

I was contacted by the main dealer today to say that a box (which apparently everyone has?) which sits behind the unit in the dashboard, needs an update/changing. Kenwood have sent this to the dealer and I need to take my car in for them (the dealer) to change this box over which will sort out the problem. Apparently it is not something that can be sorted out with the usual update via SD card or USB. I will only be able to take my car in in a couple of week's time as it is not mega urgent and they say will only take an hour or so while I wait. They don't want me to do it myself as the unit is under warranty and they fitted it, so I can't really grumble about that.

Once I have had this done I will update you all if it has fixed the problem or not!

Sounds like the climate/reverse park interface box - pretty sure the kenwood unit needs this in addition to the standard interface loom.

Can you also confirm for me, if you have the white MFD, if the kenwood displays on this like the admundsen does? i.e. When NAV is active it displays direction arrows and distances on the MFD, same for music etc...

I took my car into the dealer a coupe of days ago for them to replace the box behind the unit and I can confirm that this fixed the problem, and now the Kenwood unit displays both left and right temperatures correctly.

As for the query on whether the MFD wilk display the direction arrows, I can't recall it doing this, but I will chack next time I use the satnav.

I can confirm my Kenwood does NOT show any arrows etc on the standard maxidot.

And mine suffers the temprature display fault.

Looks like a quick trip to the dealer today, I assume it was FOC upgrade?

I wasn't charged by the dealer as the Kenwood was still under warranty.

Mine was installed brand new in July this year surprised it did not have the upgraded box being that late.

Thanks for the info.

For anybody who has had this fitted quite recently, did you have to ask specifically for the upgrade box? Or is it now part of the standard 'package' when you order the 521? Mine is being fitted on Tuesday so I'm hoping everything comes as standard! :)

That is a good question. When I bought the car from the dealer at the end of August this year (2 year old car), I paid them to change the Bolero stereo and install the Kenwood. I would have assumed that the Kenwood they were putting in would work 100% and show all the correct readings etc., which I did check with them beforehand. Also, according to the Kenwood website it is supposed to show the climate settings. Therefore, I think the customer should feel quite entitled for everything to be working properly when the new unit has been installed. In my instance, I was unaware that the box needed to be different, and the main dealer that fitted the Kenwood was obviously unaware of it when they fitted it too.

And after all, Skoda are marketing this upgraded Kenwwod stereo as being a Skoda approved product, so we should expect it to work properly when they install it.

Well called into my main dealer and asked about the "box/interface" got told it is nothing to do with the built in interface at the rear of the Kenwood unit!

It is simply go do an update of the software/firmware?

So promptly downloaded latest firmware which took me from version 1.8 to 1.12 but did not change a thing with respect to the temperature readings..grrr.

Did notice there are two firmware versions one is marked as "vehicle" which displays 0.0 is this the firmware/software that needs updating?

Like I say Mr Skoda said there is no such box upgrade.

It is likely to be either be a coding change or a firmware update to the Central Electics Control Model (CECM) or the CAN gateway.

It will be related to how the gateway sends information to the Kenwood. It's a shame that more accurate information hasn't been given to you, about what they've actually done to cure the fault. Although I'm sure the vast majority of dealership customers wouldn't have been that bothered; they just want it to work :)

In relation to the use of Maxidot with the Kenwood, that isn't possible because of the protocol used to send that information to the dash cluster. You would need a factory stereo for this to work; a Columbus satnav unit in the case of navigation instructions showing up on the Maxidot display.

Are there any of the Skoda Tech's who would like to comment on what the update / change actually is.

Mine was fitted by a dealer before I bought the car and I don't fancy driving the distance to take it back to the dealer who fitted it just for a quick software update that anyone could do.

Any thoughts
