Alloy wheel balance weights

Featured Replies

I've had a new tyre fitted to the car this evening and when I've got home I've noticed that the guy has put the balance weights on the outside edge of the wheel so they are VERY noticeable.

The wheels have been recently refurbished ( he know this) so I'm a bit pee'd at how bad this looks.

Question is, does it matter if the weights are further in ? ie has the guy been lazy and just stuck them on without giving it a second thought?

Thinking of going back tomorrow . don't want to look like a moaning bugger but I'd like to see if they can be moved further back out of sight

Do you mean on the face of the wheel?

Not sure what you mean, got a photo?

they should use stick on ones on the inside of the rim not knock ons on the outside, I'd want legs broken!

They should be adhesive weights, sounds like a clip on has been used?

I think he means they are stuck on the inside of the wheel but more towards the spoke side

I dont know about balancing but maybe thats where they need to be

Here you go...not the best pic but am I right to think that these could/should have been placed further inside the wheel?

They are very noticeable. Think I'm going back tmrw night to see if they can be moved. Just hope they don't leave a permanent mark if they are moved

They shouldn't really be any further inside as they are trying to weight the outside of the wheel. That said a good fitter will normally go behind the spoke although this normally means more weight elsewhere as they are not in the ideal place.

To be honest the guy has put them where they are obviously needed, that said the better quality the Balancer you can actually specify where the weight goes...I.e behind the spoke.

If you put them behind the spoke then they'd be in the wrong place to balance the wheel.

I wouldn't say a fitter doing this was brilliant. Quite the opposite.

There are some on a rear wheel that are just further in up against the wheels inner ( middle ) lip ... I guess I'd just have preferred them there so they don't stick out like a sore thumb. Wouldn't mind so much if I hadn't just had them refurbished :-/

This sounds sad but the weights they use these days are not lead so they rust , so when i got my tyres fitted last week i got home took of the wheels, masked of the weights then primed them and painted them with alloy wheel paint.  :p

Rust even quicker if you spray them with iron x as I discovered last time I gave the wheels a good clean.

Some balancers have the option to split the weights up do they can be hidden.
