PD170 Sudden loss of power, not running, quite smokey

Featured Replies

Hi Folks,

Venturing over from the Fabia section here for some advice from you guys.

I have a good friend with a 2007 Leon FR with the PD170 engine which has all but lay down.

It has 70K a DPF removal and a remap, other than that its pretty standard.

When he was driving home yesterday about 50mph, it lost power and he pulled in to the hard shoulder where it promptly died and shut off.

He waited about 5 mins and restarted it sat at 1k RPM and then jumped to 1.5k RPM before shutting down again.

When it lost power it  spewed out some smoke, i'm unsure of the colour but when I was at his house it was a light grey rather than white or black on start up and revving before promptly dying again if the revs were not maintained.

We did a little triage:

Checked fuel by taking off pipes - OK

Checked Air Filter - OK

Checked IC Pipes... (just at the front of the engine, a little oily residue, but nothing more than I expected) - Smoke in the pipes... thick heavy grey smoke.

Took off cold side to the turbo -  to see If I could see the vanes of the turbo/move the spindle, couldn't see the vanes but there was zero movement from the cold side of the turbo which I guess is a good thing?

Eventually blocked off the EGR to the inlet with a coke tin as a temporary measure, this seems to fix the issue and the car drove and pulled well after it. Seemed totally normal.

This morning I've been informed that there is no power in the car again.

Any idea as to what else this could be?

Thanks in advance

Niall

Oh to add to this there are no lights on the dash :)

He needs a scan done with VCDS to find out what's going on. The PD engine is well known for coking up turbo and EGR but i suspect that this may not be the only problem your friend has at this stage. Once you have the scan you can google the codes. If if just comes up with the overboost code then post back and I will give you more help if I can.

Thanks Radders,

I had done a scan on it earlier in the week as it had shown similar symptoms but seemed to clear itself.

I have the VCDS log at home but there's not much to remark on. An issue with the rear doors and an ABS fault.

There were no overboost codes at this time, but not to say that its not appeared since.

We consulted SERE SEAT in Belfast and they have confirmed that the injectors have been replaced in the recall. Unsure about the injector loom however.

Oh and here was the temporary blank we put in last night...

It sounds like your friend has been having issues with the EGR valve jamming up and too much recirculated gas getting into engine. I'm sure there was something on Briskoda about people having issues and replacing a gasket with one which has a smaller hole in it to reduce the recirculated gas.

He's blocked it off again last night and its back to normal. EGR Delete and some blanks have not been ordered!

Thanks for the help folks
