banging noise from dsg

Featured Replies

hi all i drive an 2007 2.0 skoda octavia with dsg. I've had it for six weeks and love it to bits. but twice now when driving slowly there has been a noticeable bang when accelerating from the dsg.i've tried to replicate it but it won't do it all the time.it's like a clunk you would hear on a propshaft taking up free play on a universal joint.could it be a c.v. joint ?

cheers,

barney333

May not be anything to worry about, from experience I've found DSG every now and again can be a bit rough with its changes, usually when the electronics get it wrong...after all it is a electromechanically controlled manual gearbox.

If its an occasional thump when changing gear rather than a bang just see how it goes, if its making a very loud noise best get it looked at.

thanks pipsyp, i feel better now, its my first auto and i didn't really know what to expect.

They do a good job of imitating a regular auto most of the time but of course have no torque converter.

You'll notice it most when challenging it with low speed manouvers on a reasonable incline, mine clonks alot whilst trying to get parked on my driveway; the gearbox pulling the clutch plates apart to prevent high oil temps in the gearbox and premature plate wear (is probably contributing to it in reality but never mind.

only thing to be aware of is that the gearbox oil ought to be changed every 40k miles and often isnt; might be worth checking if your DSG has seen an oil change in its lifetime.

yes pipsyp, the car has done 73k and because there was no indication on the service book that it was done ,i asked them to change the gearbox oil and microfilter before i picked the car up,they then signed the book to say that it was done and they also changed the engine oil and filter,i'll probably get it done again at 80k at an independant whom i trust.

We had this on a Polo GTI. Intermitant knock when accelerating. Had been to dealers with "no fault found".

Having careful inspection we found engine mount bolts loose.

Might be worth checking your engine mount bolt torques.

Hi folks

At the moment i run 2004 Mk 1 octvia1.9 TDI diesel ALH eng It runs very well and always returns 60's to the gallon but i fanced dsg auto.

i am thinking of changing it  for  Octavia 1.9 later TDI or Superb with dsg autobox ,i have heard many stories of the pd engine is nothing but trouble mainly electronic controled injectors i have been told not to have dsg autobox as they are mega money to repare if this so what sort of milage should i avoid buying dsg at

Any infor on above buy owners would be much appreciated

Up to 602,000kms on my "fragile" & "unreliable" PD engined DSG 2.0Tdi Elegance.      Go figure??

Paradoxically, avoid buying one brand new! In the case of the 6 speed DSG there seems to be a few that come out of the factory faulty and fail or cause trouble right away, or they seem to go for miles and miles with no fault (as k.young has said...he must hold the world record for miles covered on a DSG).

Both the 2.0 and 1.9 PD engines are very reliable. I have one of each and they are great engines....the 1.9 is especially renowned for being bullet proof and as long as you buy a 2.0 that was built after 2006, they are pretty much just as reliable (they fixed the porous head problem by then).
