Tyre wear..4mm in 2000 miles?

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

My brother bought a 2010 Mini Clubman at the end of August. It had brand new rear tyres and a sensible amount of tread on the fronts. Anyway it went to Mini today as the service light came on and as they had agreed at sale it wouldn't need a service till next year they agreed to pay. Anyway he went to collect the car to then be told the front tyres were illegal and that he had worn 4mm (half the tread) of the rears in 2k miles. I can only think that the tyres were not as they have noted when it was bought as surely using that amount of tread in a shade over 2 months is insane. He doesn't drive it aggressively and is a very careful/slow driver. They have quoted him £130 a corner for the fronts but I know they can be bad cheaper. I just find it unbelievable that that amount of rear tread could be used in 2k miles on a fwd car! And even the fronts had a decent level when he bought as I checked them before purchase and was happy they had a decent life left in them!

Any advice? They are Bridgestone tyres and I've suggested he changes them for a different brand. They are not the flats either.

How many miles had it done in 3 years that it needed new tyres, or had the Rears gone to the front & the new pair had gone on the rear.

Was the Invoice in with the Service book for New Tyres?

Only advice can be get new tyres at a price and performance of tyre that he needs,

your Brother bought it, & you checked the tyres and made an assessment of them, how they were noted hardly matters,

you looked and believed they were new on the rear.

and if he is the only driver, then he knows his use.

So they have worn, next tyres fitted and he will see how they do.

Which Bridgestones are on now, performance orientated, fast wearing, or ECO not long lasting possibly.

Nothing to stop him getting fitted Non Run Flats of what ever flavour suits how he uses the car and drives.

He just needs the correct size, Speed & Load rating.

?Does he regularly check, tyre pressures. or checked and adjusted them since he bought the car?

Only 2 months ownership to wear the tyres,

but how many miles have been covered in the 2 months is it the 2000 miles?

I've got over 20k out of a set of Bridgestone RE050s on my 330d and they came on the car, so I'm not sure how many they'd done before that.

Does sound high though, my sister's MINI is nowhere near that bad on tyres.

Well the dates on the front set are week 0612 and they are now illegal and the car has done 15kish judging by the service history. The rears have 0913 on them and were fitted by the dealer according to them when he bought it. He has done 2k since the 28th August when he collected it.

I've done 20k on a set of budget budgets so its concerning that branded tyres are wearing so quickly.

Check please and see which Bridgestones he has on the car.

Have they worn evenly on the tread? If they haven't I'd suggest doing a 4 wheel alignment check to see. For piece of mind, probably do one anyway.

I'm I right in saying they are normal 'summer' tyres, as winter ones will wear more in high temperatures.

Depending on the tyres on the car the mini used to get between about 20-30k miles on soft tyres and 60k+ on harder ones (Michelin/pirelli p3000)

It had brand new rear tyres and a sensible amount of tread on the fronts.

Did it 100%? DId he check it?

If he doesn't drive fast, then it's very unlikely they were new tyres to wear that quickly. Even if it's a Bridgestone budget tyre, they wouldn't wear that quick.

As something mentioned above, it could be poor alignment or I was thinking that maybe it's to do with his driving style... does he slams the brakes on when he drives etc?
