quick electrical question on mk1 favorit

Featured Replies

Hi all. Just wondering if this is normal (see attached pic) at the bottom left.

Went out the other Day and front dipped would not turn off even after removing all fuses and relays! I broke the huge ugly bit of what seems like melted solder of the back of the fuse box and seems to be ok. Just wondered if anyone had seen this before and what could of caused it?

Cheers all

There are only two possible explanations: it's either man made (previous owner tried to have dip beam stay lit also on high beam position?) or a huge amount of current made that solder run down. One thing is for sure, the factory tinned those traces, but didn't put a blob of tin on PCB. You'll be fine if you cleaned that area and isolated all traces.

Cheers for the reply Adurer. You helped me before on the other thread when all my dash lights were still on even with the key removed, and told me to keep checking for issues or keep a fire ext handy!

I think this is the culprit of that problem as well. After isolating all the tracks (scratching between with a knife until i got down to the board) the car is on top form, the only thing that makes me think this was not the only issue is cause the recent electrical issues that lead me to remove the fuse box, happened as i went through, admittedly, a lot of water at 20mph.. but the fuse box/area was completly dry so cannot see how this bit of messy solder suddenly caused a problem after goign through water. I do get water coming into the car during rain, but on the drivers side, but thats another thread that i need to make i think.

No problem.

One last check for peace of mind. Do a parasitic draw test like so: ignition key off, remove battery positive cable and insert an ampmeter in series (negative lead to cable you disconnected and positive lead to positive battery post). The measured current should be less than 25 mA. Don't forget to turn off interior light, baggage light, and radio. Ask somebody to wiggle the engine bay, dash, and tail wires and watch for sudden current raise.

Now that is a damn good idea. Thanks for the tips. I'm gonna try that out tomorrow morning for sure. might go as far to take dash off and have a wiggle of wires behind there as well as I suspect the issue is from drivers side (right side) as that's where water comes in and drops off the brake pedal. Cheers!!!
