VRS 1.4TSI - how common is high oil consumption?

Featured Replies

We're on the verge of ordering a new 1.2TSI 105PS Fabia Estate, but I've noticed a 60-plate VRS Estate for sale at what seems to be a good price.

However, I've read of the issues people have with high oil consumption on the 1.4TSI, leading to updated breather kits being fitted; software updates and even replacement engines - but how common are these issues?

The car I'm looking at has about 27k on the clock, and would come with 12 months Skoda warranty - am I right in assuming that if it had issues they'd have occurred (and hopefully been fixed!) by now?

The car was built after the first 2010-11 cars that all should have had ECU updates.

At 27,000 miles i would have expected it to have shown high oil usage if it was going to.

Any further updates get done at services, or should be done at services.

Ask the Dealer if any Warranty work has been required and has been done, it should show on the Skoda Database.

Maybe get the Dealer to have a Service done before you buy/collect the car,

i take it, it has had one at 1 year/9400 miles & at 2 years.

The 2 year 'Inspection Service' should have had the Car plugged in and any Updates uploaded.

Get an oil & filter change done and maybe get them to change the Spark Plugs.

(they will say they are due at 40,000 miles, but ask them to change them anyway)

You are covered well with the Warranty,

and you can buy a 2 year extended Warranty when it runs out, currently £547.

most are fine.... :) you could ask to see the V5 and contact the previous owner...

How many owners has it had?  Could hint at a problem.  Definitely ask for a log of all warranty work carried out, and basically what Sharky and George said.

its only common on here and were only a small % of owners, good and bad in every make of car im afraid

Agree with what has been said so far but would add that part of the vRS's bad oil consumption reputation comes from buyers who are expecting totally nil oil use.

It seems that whilst some cars use no oil and a few use loads and have to have serious work done to correct the problem, the majority, like mine, use some oil,say a litre per 3000-5000 miles, which is nothing to worry about but some owners get panicked unnecessarily.

There are around 2200-2400 UK Registered MK2 vRS. 2010-2013

Twice that number of Seat Cupras 2009-2013, and about 1000 Polo GTI & A1 185ps,

With the UK CAVE engines vRS from 2010-2012 it seems to have been about 20% of the cars. Many of those were the First Demonstrators from Dealers sold to Customers. Some of those were Media Cars.

Up to engines now that have around 60,000 miles Max miles on them. Many higher mile ones had no problems.

Skoda should maybe admit the figures publicaly of the Warranty Repairs that have been done IMO.

From the CTHE Engine cars since late 2012 to now it seems to be only a very few so far that have had oil issues.

No idea the CTHE engine cars highest miles covered yet.

A couple of Briskoda Members i know of have had CTHE engine replaced already.

Thanks for the feedback, seem to be far too many people with issues for my liking! If I bought the car I'd end up warranty-ing it up to the hilt, and then trading it in once the warranty was up - and there'd always be that worry about breaking it.

Mine has used 1lt in 6,000 miles, which cost £14 to replace.

It's a stonking engine, 40+mpg when driving to work, yet rapid when driving home.

I would say you are safer with a CTHE engine than with many other vehicles, none on the market from any manufacturer, have 100% guaranteed reliability.

if any do, i would love to know which.

The faults are now well known, and very few with the CTHE engine are likely to have problems, anything can easily and quickly dealt with by Skoda.

if you are going to keep beyond 5 years old i can see your point, but up till then the Warranty & Skoda Assistance has you pretty well covered.

What do you do if your engines been replaced like ours and it's still using oil roughly 1 litre per 1500 miles it was a hard enough fight to get the first engine looked at and finally replaced just put up with it or go through more oil consumption tests we had 3 on the last one engine was replaced at 12000 miles now has 17500 on it ?

12,500 miles in 2 years and the original bottle of oil in the boot.

My CAVE engined VRS has used no oil at all - great car!
