Quick Bodge Repair Advice Needed

Featured Replies

Hi

Am after a quick bodge repair advice, I have a Fabia SDI Estate, the high level brake light has broken clips and rain water is seeping in and running down into the tailgate, enough that when you open the tailgate a mini waterfall comes out the rubber bungs at the bottom corners.

I know I need to get a replacement light and little rubber gasket, but I cant drive at the moment due to poorly elbow, so after a quick bodge repair with stuff I am likely to have at home or can be got at local shops.  What can I use to seal up the light fitting ? for the moment I have some wide packing tape over it, but in the torrential rain last week its leaking through. Is it worth sealing with some household sealant just for now ?

Any advice greatfully recieved.

Cheers

Clear silicone sealant, as used for bathrooms, showers and sinks etc

Really the best thing would be to order your light on-line for next day delivery from your dealer, or fleabay

Cheers for the reply National.

There are a few things I need to buy for the Fabia, tend to use place in Trafford Park, but know I cant get there for a week or two. I just need to seal it up today to stop rain getting in for the next few weeks.

This will seem a stupid question ( I admit to being a Newbie, but we all start learning somewhere) do I need to prepare the painted metal and the plastc light fitting before applying the sealant ? Just clean and then quick wipe with a dap of white spirit or do I need to do more ?

Thanks

The trouble with using silicone is that it's difficult to clean off afterwards if any re-painting is entailed, personally for a cheap quick temporary job I would use either plasticine or blue tack.

When using silicon sealant, you just use a WET finger to wipe it, either spit on your finger or use a cup of water

Plastacine or blue tac sounds good but water will seep down the back of it (Trust me I am NOT a plumber) IMHO

Thanks all.

Have done a super quick blu tack job yesterday, today hopefully the rain will stay away and I can put some silicon sealant.

Cheers
