E46 BMW M3's

Featured Replies

Anyone on here had one? I've got a hankering for one really bad. I know of the subframe cracking issues and the importance of the running in service having been carried out. Just wondered what they are like to live with day in day out.

Really need to take on for a test drive and see what they are like. Only other similar car I can think of is the C32 AMG but I think the M3 is a bit more special.

I have briefly owned one and it was brief because of getting a quick profit on it.

I liked it, but i like lots of cars, and some are more of a worry than others to own.

Just been looking at 2 recently for a family member, 2004 SMG 68,000 miles £10,000 asking price

and  2006, Manual, 83,000 miles £12,000 Asking Price, both lovely and full service history. Not paying the Asking Prices though,

so waiting and we will see if they sell them.

Also dismissed several £6,000-£8.000 that are showing rust and nothing but future expense.,

Condition, maintenance etc, all important.

But seeing as the 'running in service was more than 6 years ago, and a lot of pedal to the metal might have happened since,

what is the importance of that, compared to the past several services?

they used a different bedding in oil on the running in service, if this was missed it can affect engine wear. I know this would have been carried out a long time ago, but worth checking it was carried out as it can affect resale values.

Really! Effect resale value.

I will remember that as a negotiation point.

Might as well give the vendor a laugh.

Have fun looking.

Alistair at Unit 18 had one until about a year ago. I was lucky enough to take it for a spin, it'd always been a bit of a thing of mine. It lived up to everything I thought, fast, smooth, sounds amazing but also happy to poodle along at 70mph or go through town in traffic. It's a kinda do everything car. I know Alistair spent a long long time looking for his, manual & hard top are the ones to get, drivers choice and will hold money the best in the future. He looked at many with awful rust down to poor accident repairs so certainly need a good inspection before buying. In the end it went and got replaced by a E90 320d, the M3 as lovely as it was was just too juicy and expensive to run. That said, he has a 400bhp track car so I guess he didnt need a mega fast daily.

I'd like to own one at some point, hopefully before the prices start going up too much, I think it'd be a good do everything car but I have houses and weddings to put money towards first. Keep us updated if you test drive/view any!

Steer clear of SMG!! Pumps usually fail and if clutches are worn expensive replacement.

If you road test one, go into a car park and drive in tight turning circles listening for knocking from the rear. diffs become noisey.

I'd like one, and did consider one for a while but I couldn't justify the costs for sitting in a traffic jam in Oxford city center! I think the money would be better spent on a do-er up E30 or something.

Also check the cost of the brake disks and services as I think they need valve clearances doing.

I've been in a Z4M with the same engine and it was amazing! I doubt the M3 is much slower, just more practical.

Servicing costs can get expensive. Valve clearances should be checked but unfortunately is often overlooked :o

The inspection 2 service should check the valve clearances, inspection service 2 are about £600 from a good indy. I'll probably only own it for a year, it's just an itch I need to scratch. Going to hopefully take one out on Saturday, I've driven some fast cars recently so don't expect to be blown away.

one word of advise if your getting an smg, ensure you have big pockets to put it right if it goes wrong, other than that have mate that has owned a convertible one with lpg for few years now and he has loved every minute of it.
