sump guard problem on tdi l&k

Featured Replies

Asking on behalf of my old man.

I know vRS octy's have been known to get a little airbourne and crack the sump on landing. (Un)fortunately, my dad has never been airbourne before and has just occasionally scraped a hump a bit too hard.

Result was a broken sump guard, which has now been replaced by the stealers.

Hoever, apparently, he's still having problems with the new one. For example, when on the m'way doing normal speeds, get into one of those dips where the car oscillates a bit with the suspension sorting itself out. He'll get the sump guard scraping then. And this is with only one up in a pd130 tdi L&K estate with no lugguage and completely standard.

I'll have a quick look at some point, but it really does sound wrong.

Any thoughts?

TIA

Two things:

1) It does indeed sound wrong. How much clearance is there between the ground and the sump guard? On mine (4x4 octy) the sump guard is a little lower than the front bumper.

2) How the F has he managed to damage the sump guard?!? I have tried farily hard (trust me please) but the worst I can manage is a small set or scratches on it. Not a dent to be seen.

Is it the pukka metal one or the standard plastic one? The plastic one may be missing a couple of screws which will result in it hanging too low.

4x4 is about 1.5 - 2 " higher off the ground. I know someone who cracked the sump on their 4x4. I've "done" 2 sumps, the first was after an 18m flight, the second on a badly designed spped hump (just knowed it which led to it starting to seep oil).

My only conclusion is, you ain't trying hard enough :D

Ian's IIRC. Are you really saying that I should be able to dent the metal sump guard? I've had sparks, but no dent :o

Yep, Ian's :Dnope you shouldn't be able to dent it - scrape it or scratch it, put a big gouge in it yes, but not bend. I've had sparks too :D

I think he's talking about the standard plastic one though - mine vapourised :D

It's the weedy plastic one, Jon, the one fitted to the car from factory.

I guess I need to have a look, or he needs to have a look. But I think some of the screws fell off / snapped off / sump plastic broke off before so it must be a weak design in the first place. In fact, makes me think it's not guarding anything really, it's probably just stopping water getting under the engine when the road's wet.

I'll do some more investigation and probably enquire about the metal one - he sounds interested. You wouldn't have the part numbers for it by any chance? :D

Indeed he has' date=' and posted them HERE

Bear in mind that some of the "O"s are in fact zeroes. "1J0" etc etc

Also bear in mind that if the dealer hasn't fitted this item before he will probably spend a while sratching his head, as it doesn't *quite* fit, especially if you want the side shrouds to still be there. But tell them to just leave the side guards (plastic) attached by the top only - I promise they don't flap around ;)
