electric windows - what left to try? does it have relay? thermal fuse?

Featured Replies

Hi all, still no luck with my electric windows in 55 plate 1.2 fabia. Have put it on ebay but might have one last try. Have seen so many conflicting things online as to whether or not there is a relay or relays for the windows or whether there is a thermal fuse at the motor instead? any help would be appreciated as neither of the 2 switches i have work at all (the lock / unlock buttons still work) no wires seem loose either and the window fuses seem ok but nothing moves at all and i can't try it with the door key as that no longer turns either! the key fob windows function mustn't work in my model so kind of stuck.........:(

Pretty sure the thermal fuse is part of the drivers door motor,

Hi, so does that mean it wouldn't have a relay? would the thermal fuse have a manual reset button on it? am starting to think rain getting in could have triggered that but I can't face taking the whole door apart. Anyone got any pics of where it is on the motor if it might have a manual reset?

Fairly sure its due to rain. Had this problem last year, windows stopped working this time of year and started working again when the weather warmed up again! Same has happened again this year. I've had the control unit/motor out of the door before but don't think that is the problem. I suspect water is getting into wiring somewhere?

Very common for window regulators to go.

Do all the elec windows not work or just 1?

If none of the windows work and the mirrors still work its most likely the drivers side motor has packed in as it has the control ecu for them both. If your windows and mirrors both dont work its the comfort system thats in the dash that is at fault.

What else does the comfort system control? if it helps, the central locking still works and the alarm when triggered off the fob. Yes, neither of the windows work at all

Check the wires in the drivers door hinge 1st ;)

Hi, nothing seems loose, also seems really awkward to get the rubber boot off to get the connectors out, presumably if I can check for power at the switch end that would mean having to cut the cable tie and removing the inner black connector as my multimeter seems too big to check the contacts on the light brown plug? is that a good start. Really wish I could have a wiring diagram to work through things, or just click my fingers and everything would be ok :). Is so annoying when I get 13 months MOT on the car to sell then the windows stop working :(

Once the rubber is off u will be able to see the wires.

It is common for wires ro split/ fray in the hinge. The wires go to the motor 1st so testing at the switch wouldnt be to much help.

U wont need to take the connector off or use the multi meter unless there is no wires split :)

thanks, good to know the wires go to the motor first. Really hoping there is some signs of fraying or a split as don't fancy taking the door panel off as I really just need to sell the vehicle soon. Still be interesting to know if there is a thermal fuse and if it has a manual reset after all the rain that got in

Also, am I right in thinking that it is unlikely to be the convenience unit as the central locking works fine (apart from the key won't turn in the door even trying graphite powder, though that's probably gone solid through lack of use) the interior lights, 12v socket, alarm all work fine too.

All that the window switches do is request that a certain window goes up or comes down, they don't complete a circuit to make the windows work.  The request is in a message form which gets processed by the door control units and the convenience unit and only the actuator which the message is intended for should recognise it and respond to it.

There in lies the problem, there's upto 3 control units in the loop, what you first need to do is to look at the convenience unit with a diagnostic tool and see what it's seeing.  Are all the switches, doors and door locks reporting their correct state?, are their statuses changing as they're operated?, is the convenience unit 'seeing' the door units?

What happens when you reboot them by disconnecting the battery?, what happens if you disconnect individual door units?

Have the control units being replaced in the past?, if so are they compatible with each other? is the convenience unit correctly coded so that it knows that the car has 2 electric windows?

There's plenty to try, but you'll need VCDS or similar to try it.

phew! that is quite a list, have 14 watchers on ebay so may not be necessary in the end but would have liked to have sorted them.

I have changed the battery recently but the windows worked after it was changed. No other units have been changed as I have had the car since new. Would it be ok to disconnect the battery to reboot? for how long? and can this affect other things?

Disconnect the battery for 5 or 10 minutes, you'll lose your trip computer data, have to reset the clock, recode the radio (maybe) and retune the radio, and (hopefully) the one touch on the windows.

is it enough to just take the earth off? when I changed the battery the radio was fine before. Could this reset things if there is no fault in the window circuit?

My vRS electric windows have packed up again, just like last winter. When it happened two weeks ago I just swapped the two fuses around and they worked again but now, nothing. It always appears to happen in the colder, damp weather. I might disconnect the battery tomorrow and see what happens. Frustrating to say the least.

It's fine to disconnect the earth and it shouldn't give you problems.

ok, will try that tomorrow evening and leave it off for about 10 minutes? see if it resets anything :)

ok, some form of progress lol, sprayed everything I could easily get to with contact cleaner tonight including the fuses and took the battery off for half an hour. Still nothing though window switches still light up. Then, noticed I had left interior light on, went to passenger door and just for the hell of it tried that switch and IT WORKED! then didn't later :(

Took drivers switch back out and apart and noticed quite a lot of moisture on the printed circuit and rubber pad, dabbed these dry and sprayed with contact cleaner. Am I getting any closer? lol, had nothing previously for 3 weeks!

Strange, came home tonight and neither window works but then noticed the drivers side is down about half an inch!
