Fitting a front wheel bearing assembly?

Featured Replies

Hello. So after realising my front wheel offside bearing has given up the ghost i'm looking at getting a new one.

Instead of buying just the bearing and having to take it all off and getting the garage to remove and press fit it in would I be better buying the complete unit like this?

If so, what is involved in fitting it? Is it a big job and do I still need anything pressing in or anything like that?

Would people recommend doing that rather than fitting just a single bearing?

Thanks for any replies :)

Daniel!

That bearing in your link will still need pressing on.  There is a tool that can do it on the car but they cost around £200, some garages may have it, some not, if not, the knuckle will need removing and taken to a press.

Looking at your link it says ASB bearing, do they mean ABS?  If you're going to get a garage to do the work, it may make sense to get a genuine part from VW, though it will be more expensive, it will have a 2 year warranty on it and you know it'll work.  I've recently encountered a problem with a non genuine rear wheel bearing causing the engine to rev up, the speedometer stop working and a few warning lights appearing.

Is it the outer race that needs pressing into the hub? Not too familiar with the hub itself so I can't get my head around what is required to fit. Don't suppose there is a guide anywhere is there?

I think ASB is a type of bearing manufacturers.
