Erratic rain sensor

Featured Replies

My rain sensing wipers are working a bit erratically. Sometimes they stay on when the screen is dry, even speeding up at times when it doesn't need to. I know about the stalk settings to adjust the sensitivity but is there anything in vcds to manage the sensitivity? And how exactly does it work?

Thanks in advance

Adam

There are settings in VCDS but I would try cleaning the screen properly and check your wipers first.

Thanks. Which bit is doing the sensing do you know?

Behind the rear view mirror. Looking from the outside you will see the sensor.

I think it works by detecting disturbance in the light entering the sensor so if there's rain or much on it the light coming in is different to no light on it.

Cheers. Presumably you mean where the mirror is mounted to the glass? I will give it a good clean tomorrow and see how it goes. The blades are quite new so I don't think its them but I will clean them too in case they have some residue on them.

If cleaning is no good and I do need to get my VCDS out to check the sensitivity, is it in the central electronic module?

Thanks again

Adam

Hi, I have noticed that the sensor might be fooled under certain circumstances.

  • Driving in city lights during dark or semi-dark hours.
  • When the wiper goes back down towards its rest position, leaving some minor moist residue just where the sensor is located.
  • When an oncoming truck drags up water from the road surface while it passes in the oncoming lane.

... but most often it does a pretty good job! At least so far, uses it all the time ... and I have really had the opportunity since it has been raining more or less since the day I picked up my Superb FL like 4 weeks ago ... :rain: ... and I normally use the second sensitivity setting during day light and the third setting when it's dark. Works for me ...

Now it's time for the dog to have its evening walk, have a good night ...

Mine has been excellent too, until very recently. I think it is also getting fooled in my case, possibly due to the general extra dampness about at present.

Having searched a couple of posts on here, the indication is that it is possible to do what you want in VCDS. I haven't looked myself yet, but guessing it is in the 09 module somewhere.

You could probably just tell the car it doesn't have the rain sensitive wipers and they would work as normal wipers.

Just like the superb MK2 that comes with the rain/light sensor but the wipers work as normal. A quick tweak in VCDS and they then work as auto.
