Going to do Cambelt!

Featured Replies

Hi!

Going to do the cambelt in a few weeks and I'm a little nervous! I'm not personally doing it but an engineering friend of mine is going to tackle the brain side of it!

Firstly I'm worried about the timing side of things. I know that there are 3 bolts you must undo on the camshaft that you can adjust the timing with. Now when you undo them, do you have to use Vagcom to give you the final '0' on timing or how does it work? I have read on the forum that you must undo them because of stretch in the old belt but surely Undoing them will knock the timing out totally!

Secondly I'm concerned about buying just the bog standard belt from ECP only because they are cheap and I worry they will fail!

Finally I will be getting this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VW-Sharan-1-9-2-0-TDI-PD-VAG-Diesel-Engine-Crank-Crankshaft-Timing-Lock-Tool-Set-/221305048604?pt=UK_Hand_Tools_Equipment&hash=item3386cf0e1c too so hopefully that will solve my issues!

Any hints and tips would be useful thanks!!

You only slacken the 3 bolts off, it helps when you fit the new belt, if the sprocket moves to the full extent either way on the 3 bolts it does not completely put the timing out, however after fitting and the engine won't start you slacken the 3 bolts and adjust slightly to enable the engine to start, once started you can then use VCDS to set the measuring blocks to 000.

Get it spot on, it's worth the time and effort, in both performance and MPG wise.

DB.

You basically slacken the 3 bolts off as mentioned. Your mate should know what to do anyway. Unless he is PU?

Tbh fella its not that hard! Just make sure you get the engine mount bracket right out!

I done mine last week and if you need any info then drop me a PM :)
