Engine bay cleaning.

Featured Replies

Don't know if this is the right place ( feel free to move it)

Hi all after working on the car I've noticed that the engine bay needs cleaning up. Just going to use the hose and not jet wash.

Take it I'm best to cover the case box and battery and the alternator any thing alse?

I thought I would use some tesco brand muk off spray ( bike cleaner)

Would that be OK ?

Thanks.

Is you car petrol or diesel?

I use TFR (traffic film remover) on the Yeti, I use a spray bottle to apply it neat, and spray it everywhere, leave it for a good 10-15 minutes and usually apply some more in this time.

Then it is in with the pressure washer to blast everything clean, bay looks like new when it is done. I always go for a good run after to get everything hot and dry things out afterwards, never had an issue.

I am sure other members will let you know what they do.

Plus one for TFR, I buy 25l bottles at a time from automotive paint supplies, strips everything oily. Don't get it in your eye though, stings like crap.

It melts skin off your fingers too if you use a sponge to rub it in, I often use it neat on tar spots, just melts them away brilliantly. Have to wax the car afterwards though as it is aggressive.

Going to try some of this myself, im guessing the non caustic bio degradable stuff would be best to use at home?

Ade, I will get you a bit if you want, I buy it from Caldo on there trade counter in St Helens, it is green stuff, it is brilliant for cleaning alloy wheels too.

Very kind of you sir, thank you. I'll let you know when I'm ready for some, my daily has just decided to spit its innards out of the engine so its off to the big scrapyard in the sky tomorrow & I'm on the lookout for a cheap winter hack :)
