Kielder Off-road Safari

Featured Replies

Has anyone done one of these events Ina Yeti? The flyers I've seen in in the Castle car park suggest its soft-roader friendly, just the photos seem to be full of Simon Bush and Lyndsay Mottram types.

Not been myself, but from the stories from friends who have been there I won't be taking Dewi.

Turning up without a set of A/Ts and a snorkel might be considered a faux pas then?

The forest drive has been improved a lot over the last few years, it's now quiet easy to complete that in a 'normal' car now. A few years ago you needed something with more ground clearance to travel the full lenght of the drive.

I've never seen the route for a Kielder off road safari, but i would imagine that the weather/time of year would have a bearing as to if it was worth attempting!

We've driven the Kielder Forest Drive in our previous 2WD Yeti - there are places where the surface is better than what we pay our road tax for!

I don't know about the Safari though - there are bits of Kielder which are a little rough to say the least.

Why don't you just go do it and then let the rest of us know what it's like?  We can get Tim to organise the Spring 2014 meet there! :-)

I have done the forest drive in an A4 in the snow, and the Yeti after it has been very wet.

As for the safari you mention, I would take the Yeti but at the point of booking I would also ask the question about where it goes, chances are it uses forest roads for the chance to see the stunning scenery.

When is it? I might be up for attending this also.

This is near Kielder Head and we were in an A4, so not too bad at all as gravel roads go.

You tube clip of the safari in February, seems tame enough.

I have a  friend with a £1500 cherokee. Think i might scope it out in that first - I don't fancy being snatch-recovered via the front towing eye in what's essentially a very lovely jacked-up Golf.

From their website:

"Conventional 4×4 type vehicles will be able to accomplish the majority of the route. Before undertaking any section drivers must assess both the capabilities of their vehicle and driving ability. A conventional 4×4 can be regarded as a vehicle with good ground clearance, four wheel drive and a centre locking differential or equivalent drive system."

Looks like us 2WD types are out then - unless some alternative can be organised.

Appears that it has changed or improved. It certainly had a "reputation" in the past.

Would you care to elaborate on the "reputation"?

Winches, aggressive tyres and lots of mud!!

Oh! A real boys 4x4 day out then? :-)
