FMIC and SMIC

Featured Replies

Ok, so I'm looking to get a FMIC.

Just a quick question.... Why can't you just buy any FMIC and just extend the old piped from the SMIC... Attatch and then be done?

If you mean "throw away SMIC and attach pipework to what's left", some kits use this approach with varying degrees of sophistication.

If you mean adding a FMIC and keeping the SMIC. The realities of pipe access and shrouding of the SMIC means it's not worth it.

That's exactly what I was talking about. Getting rid of the SMIC and just attaching the remaining piped into the FMIC? Surely that's easier, cheaper and just as effective? I'm not after some fancy polished pipes in my engine bay. I just want to save my turbo from cooking itself, simple.

Thats what alot of kits do so your not the first to think. You will need a map sensor pipe though as its built in to the smic itself.

Is there a map sensor that's compatible with the fabia? Plug and play?

What does a map sensor do?

You already have a map sensor you just need a pipe like i said for it to plug in to. Forge make and sell them.

Oh ok, when you said it was built into the SMIC I thought when that goes I'll have to get one to replace it, but if it's just a pipe I need that can't be that expensive :)

No the mounting point is built in sorry, i wasnt clear on that. They are pricey for what they are if i remember correctly.

Yeah just seen. Like £40 just for the mount. Mental.

But I still like the idea of this. Just getting a universal intercooler, and just attaching the SMIC pipes. Makes sense to me.

Half of the reasons I wanted to change my intercooler though was because of the dodgy as standard VAG hose connectors and pipe work, buying a full system eliminates the need for these and reduces the chances of leaks.

You will still have to buy a few silicone and ally pipes mind to get it to all join up.

Also the brackets to get it to fit properly, the brackets provided with the kit I got were made absolutely perfect with different recesses and angles to fit in front of the radiator without binding anything. I'd pay that little bit more for a full kit and do it right but it just depends on your money limit of course.

That's not what an intercooler does, it's fitted after the turbo to cool the air down before your engine breathes it in. Simple.

Thank you :)
