Front Tyre Scrubbing Out

Featured Replies

Hi all, My octavia estate is really eating passenger front tyres, its the outer side thats wearing out quicker than a quick thing. Anyone got any ideas what might be wrong? Tracking has been done and re-done just in case but it must be something else.

Thanks in advance

Just the tracking? This sounds like a geometry issue, so I'd advise checking camber and castor angles, and for worn bushes on that corner.

It more usually wears the rears, but if you've also got any feeling of a steering pull, there may be a misalignment of the rear thrust axis.

A rear thrust axis sounds like something the Enterprise would have, or a porn film maybe?

I dont think I have much pull, But the car is on original bushets at 142k, no knocking... yet. Ill have to inspect, or have her inspected. Ill try a different garage maybe for a second opinion.

Search on you tube for some really good videos on how to check ( and if necessary ) adjust your tracking. If its scrubbing the outside of the tyre it sounds like its towing in too much. I recently fitted new suspension and took the car for a wheel alignment. Afterwards, the car was driving OK but the steering wheel was off centre. I did take it back and got a right snotty attitude of the bloke. It was actually tracked correct when he showed me the screen but I wasn't really happy with it. He mentioned to me about the back being fixed axle ( no adjustment on these ) and the back wheels were out of alignment and that's why the wheel was off centre. Just type in wheel alignment made easy into you tube you'll be surprised how easy it is to check. After I adjusted mine its driving lovely no pulling off and the wheel is central.

rear thrust axis line - The angle that the virtual axle makes to the transverse axis of the car. If you imagine it being, say, 5 degrees, it would be like driving everywhere with steering lock on. Usually if it's non-0, it scrubs the rear tyres down the road.

That said, I honestly think your issue is LHF corner.

My MK1 VRS has this at the moment too.  Front passenger side tyre is getting close to being bald on the outside, also slight pull to left.

quick into roundabouts?
