Goodyear Efficientgrip Tyres for a Seperb Elegance.

Featured Replies

I fitted 4 new Goodyear Efficient Grip tyres  to my V6 Superb and while they are generally quieter and more economical than the Pirelli P7 they have a oscillating drone at 65-75mph

It makes a noise for a second then goes away then returns  - it goes after 75mph  -  I would be interested if anyone else has noticed this

I can't comment on the Goodyears but that 'oscillating drone' as you describe it is exactly what I get on my SP2s at 65mph (105kph) up to 75mph and can also be intermittent especially on motorways.  It can be quite irritating

I also have Pirelli P7 as factory fitted and they have 12.5k miles on them (20k km). So far they are flawless. Changed them in X pattern after 10k miles.

They are beginning to show wear, I estimate they will last only another 10-15k miles

The original Continentals on the front have just been changed at nearly 12,500 miles for Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetricals.

I bought them via Black Circles and spent some time looking at specifications and reviews before choosing.  They gave an A rating for wet weather grip, which is most important, and noise was 70db, which isn't the lowest but is by no means the highest.  I had them fitted by Ian Jones Tyres in Brecon who I prefer as they use a torque wrench to tighten your nuts rather than an air gun set to maximum.

I can't comment too much on noise yet, as I've only made one trip to Abergavenny of 20 miles each way since they were fitted couple of weeks ago.  They seemed reasonably quiet on the smoother surfaces but were quite vocal over some of the rough patches where they've repaired the pot holes.  It may be that the tyres are just bedding in, but I'll have to see in due course.

Hi Chrispy B and Superb170. I have had this same issue! I had P7's on since purchase got 40Km out of set. Noise was still there with new tyres (same P7). went to dealer and they replaced both front wheel bearings and noise now gone.

Maybe check this as it fixed my noise and my Combi is now super silent.

Cheers

I had the bearings checked already and apparently there is no issue (as I would expect in a brand new car!).  I have 11K kms done at this stage and the noise does appear to be easing slightly, but maybe that is just down to me hearing it more often.  It could also be due to more tyre wear.  The dealer is already aware of it so I might get them rotated at the next service in a few weeks and if that doesn't help I will push to have them replaced.  How old is your car?

Hi mate

Its three years with 45KM on ODO

Had the car up on my lift at the week end ( have to lift both front and back as its a 4x4 )

With the engine turning the wheels checked with a stethoscope and bearings are silent

I have changed front to back and there is no difference - going to try putting the spare wheel on at the weekend and seeing if that is different

Think I'm gonna get the efficientgrip performance tyres fitted this week. Been quoted £525 fully fitted incl. 4-wheel alignment for the 18" tyres: does that sound reasonable?

I bought two a couple of months ago £244 fitted. I could have got it cheaper through Black Circle (only £15 in total) but the tyre place was in my village.

Wow, these EfficientGrip Performance tyres are a bit special.  Slightly different driving style required as the momentum of the car certainly carries forward for a lot longer from the lower rolling resistance, but not much difference in grip levels to the Conti SportContact 2 that I have just binned.  Turn in is slightly more muted, but that might just be because the new tyres have done less than 50 miles so far.  Certainly no complaints so far.

Errr... I seem to be getting 10-20% better fuel efficiency from these tyres on my daily commute vs Conti SC2: is that normal?

I found the more fuel efficient and quieter as well.
