Featured Replies

Hi i have the fabia mk1 1.4 16v at 16''s spiders.they wear 205/45/16.

I need to change to 17''s. i found vw's ''santa monica''

they wear 205/40/17.

I see to a tyre size calculator that the correct tyres are 205/50/17 or 215/45/17.

Why the 205/40/17 are most wearable?

if you have 205 -45 -16s
then you would change to 205 - 40 -17

the bigger the rim, the lower the sidewall height. Unless you've got a dub. Then the opposite applies.

But this size is outside the boundary of ± 3% is acceptable for security reasons.

205 - 45 - 16 to 205 - 40 - 17 is 0.85% or 5mm difference so is acceptable if you put bigger tyres on it will rub on the arch liners , look completely stupid and the difference will be 25mm plus?

But as said 205/40/17 is the correct size

It's nothing to do with Security, it's the accuracy of your Spedo.

Tyre retailers normally recommend a maximum of ± 2.5%. You can legally run tyres with 10-12mm difference in diameter due to tread depths. (7.5 - 1.6 mm).

The larger the overall diameter, the longer it will travel per revolution of the wheel, so spedo will over read. Eg spedo may read 70, but you will actually be doing (if normally accurate) 72mph. 215/50 and 205/50 17 are way too big. 215/40 is acceptable (2.18%), but 205/40 17 is the best fit and is also used on Mk2 Fab vRS.

If you take the starting point of 185/60R14, being standard in the UK for the OP's model, then the vRS size of 205/45R16 is already 2.25% larger. On that basis, 195/40R17 might be a better choice, being only 1.73% larger.

The main problem would then be whether tyres are available in that size with an appropriate load rating; I've only seen 81XL which might not be enough since the standard size (185/60R14) generally come with 82 load index.

Looking up in the online Skoda pdf for tyre sizes, it seems at least some 1.4 16v cars are permitted to tyres with 81 load index.
