Removing window tint.

Featured Replies

Today I have removed the tint from the windows on my Golf, it has scratches and bubbles in it and looked generally shabby.

I found a corner and peeled the tint, this came off quite easy however it left behind the layer of adhesive, so the quest began to remove this layer as efficiently as possible.

 Products used.

Warm water and Fairy liquid = Did not work.

Stanley Scraper = Not too bad but only got little bits off and would not be good on heated rear window.

White Spirit = Broke down the adhesive but rubbed back on off the clothe so not brilliant.

Lighter Fluid = Dried too quick and the cloth adhered to the window.

Finally, I remembered I had a 5 litre tin of Methyl Ethyl Ketone, this is the daddy when it comes to removing adhesive, simply apply with one cloth soaked in MEK after a minute or two to allow the MEK to attack the adhesive simply wipe away with a dry cloth, it was impressive to say the least.

If you choose this method make sure you have good gloves and eye protection on and you are working in a well ventilated environment as it is GOOD stuff. Also keep it away from your paint.

This is the product I used and recommend.

I used Bilt Hamber Paint Cleaner to remove some stubborn sticker adhesive from my paintwork.

I'd be scared of going anywhere near my car with that industrial looking stuff!

I would use IPA for such a job

Definitely no good on paintwork!!

IPA or isopropyl alcohol is not that good or aggressive at removing glue, we use litres of it in the print and packaging industry, it has problems removing labels or adhesive transfer off the path rollers.

WD40?

WD40?

really?  WD40 will remove sticky stuff, never even thought of that.

I've used it successfully many times to remove sticker residue from bottles/containers that I've wanted to reuse.

Smell and oily residue would put me off using WD40 or GT-86

I'm glad you clarrified what IPA was, I was imagining trying to use this to get rid of the residue.
