Park assist braking

Featured Replies

Im a little unsure if park assist will brake for you but here is the scenario.

I was using the park assist to parallel park, I had to apply more throttle as I was on a hill. Just as the reverse sensor tone went solid there was a horrific grinding noise and I could feel vibrations through the throttle.

Now I thought I had hit the car behind me and I jammed on the brakes. Got out and had a look around and couldn't find a mark on either car, checked the wheels... Nothing.

The only conclusion I've been able to come to is that the car braked to prevent a collision and the sound and vibration was the car trying to move off under braking.

Has anyone else experienced anything similar?

It doesn't brake for you. It says so in the manual. You are responsible for accelerating and braking the car. So you can, in fact, hit the other cars next to you. Can't comment on what you heard, since I wasn't there and there are no pics. :P

Could this have been the hill hold function?

Grinding sound makes me suspect he has hit something but not spotted the damage...

I can say with absolute certainty that the vehicle didn't make contact with anything, when I stopped to check the car was not close enough to anything for a collision and both the wife and I have double checked in day light, not a mark on the car.

I know the manual says the driver must operate the brake but I can't come up with any other explanation

Interesting thought but I was already moving when it happened

Hi,

Have had this sudden jamming on the brakes whilst in Park Assist, as had the car since Saturday afternoon.

Was trying bay parking in local leisure park, car was doing its thing. All of a sudden jamed brakes/ grinding noise. My brother and me jumped out, looked around nothing there ( no car in adjacent bay)????

Haven't read the manual to see for sure.

Kind Regards

Brian

I can guarantee that the park assist doesn't brake for you as I backed into something in my brand new vRS Estate after 2 days!!!!!! :wall:  And this was partly because I had unwittingly turned off the stereo reduced volume setting!  But of course I should have been paying more attention, but this car is larger than my old one...

I was not a happy man, luckily it was very minor mark on the car, but it is now not 'perfect' after only 2 days and out comes the touch up pen!!!! :@

Just reading the manual that came with my car, last bullet point on page 144 regarding automatic termination of park assist:

>Automatic braking for damage limitation.

and there is a whole section on it on page 145.

So it appears it can brake for you during parking.
