My Service is due this year and is cam-belt time! Now my mate owns his own garage which I have been using problem free for many years now. He is fully certified, experienced etc but is a jack of all trades kind of garage, so I am swaying with a local indy which does have a good reputation, but fee like I am cheating on my mate!

Is there any issue with a jack of all trades kind of mechanic doing a VAG cam-belt change? I obviously have read stories on tinterweb about this kind of stuff, but obviously you have to take it all with pinch of salt. So was wondering if any techie kind of guys want to give me their 2p worth, I would appreciate it!

Got it done today :)

Ive just seen your thread lol!

Sorry mate!

Personally if I trusted him and he's done them before I'd stick with your mate! I've known well regarded indi's to mess stuff up too. Sometimes better the devil you know!

No worries :D

Yeah that's just it, better the devil you know! He's always gone the extra mile with me as we were mates before he was my mechanic, EG rather than just remove or cut the rear heat shields to fit the bigger discs, he heated, bashed and straightened it all for me as it would look better, I told him to lob it off when I dropped it off to him....
