skoda fabia 1.2 htp 2005 (bmd engine code) missfire cylinder 2

Featured Replies

hi  guys

ive got a skoda fabia 1.2 htp 2005 ( bmd engine code ) i only bought this car in august for £1800 it is immaculate

recently i had the engine management light go on and the car went into limp mode on idle i pulled over and phoned the aa

aa man came and plugged it in and said missfire cylinder 2 and that i need a valve in the engine ?

the car was cured by turning off the car then restarting and it drove home faultlessly

, i went to the mechanic he said no way ! the car only needs a coil pack so  changed it out then resett light and off i went ,

the car seemed to drive perfect  now its doing the same , at idle for any period it kicks down to 2 cylinders , my mate plugged it in and it says missfire cylinder 2  , he changed the coil pack over to another cylinder and the prob stays with cylinder 2

do i really need valves changed?

it drives ok but only when you dont let it idle for too long and the eml comes on and it goes to  limp mode

if so how much would i have to pay for a fix like that ? i want to get it done as cheaply as possible and i would like to have an idea before any mechanics give me any quotes

if you dont let this we car idle too long the eml doesnt come on and it drives really well it doesnt overheat and it doesnt use oil and is great on the petrol

sorry forgot to mention that i passed mot today so emmissions are ok apparantly ?

cheers in advance

If you want it fixed your gonna need a set of plugs, about £2.60 each.

Your then going to need three coil packs. I changed some recently, about £16 each I think.

So for around £60 you can eliminate everything outside of the engine.

Valves are a common fault on the 1.2's but I don't know if your engine is effected or not.

Other than that... Injector/fuel filter maybe..

Get the ignition loom checked, loom problems are not uncommon on VAG cars, cold weather and age make the them brittle and engine vibration does the rest.

cheers guys for the fast responses :)

plugs were changed when it was serviced less than 2 weeks ago my mate changed the brand new coil pack over to another cylinder and the fault is still in cylider 2 so the other coil packs must be ok  we  i thought

i have the bmd engine i have read on here that they are affected by the valve\ head issues :(   will get the loom checked though

reading around here i think i need a compression test done il look into that tomorrow

Get it compression tested mate, especially as it seems to do at idle speed, this is usually the sign of worn valve guides, it is quite an expensive job to do and usually requires all the guides replacing and valve seats recutting. Sometimes they will burn the exhaust valve out if left too long too.

if its bad news do you think it would be cheaper to buy a second hand head ?

There's no guarantee that a secondhand head won't have the same problems, however my instinct is that this is electrical since you state clearly that the car got better before deteriorating again, burnt valves and worn guides just get gradually worse with no mechanism for remission.

No don't buy a second hand head as it will be as bad. some places now offer a recon head which may be a better option but it is removing and replacing it that costs the money too, the guides are less than £50 a set.

Also I have changed quite a few injectors on the 1.2 engines as they stick open and cause a miss too, could be worth getting them swapped around if the compression is good (compression should be above 190psi) my money is on low compression tho probly around 125psi or so as it is running ok just putting the light on then going into safe mode once it has detected enough missfires in the same cylinder.

Hey mate, I have the exact same year and engine as you. Unfortunately when getting it i had the exact same symptoms that eventually was sorted by a full cylinder head strip down, new valves and are build. Here's the link to the thread tracking my issue. http://www.briskoda.net/forums/index.php?/topic/231721-Cylinder-2-misfire-any-one-have-an-idea-of-what-to-check-next?

To be honest valves cost not much more that a couple of pounds each. All the money is in the labour so whilst it's all in bits I'd say it's worth spending the extra £20 or whatever it works out at and have them all renewed! May as well when such extensive work is being done!
