Hybrid Turbos/Turbo Upgrades

Featured Replies

Just testing the waters of Turbo upgrades. I've other things to do with the vRS yet but I'm wondering what my options are so:-

What is a hybrid turbo when compared to a bigger Turbo such as the IHI or GT28RS which are on JBS's website?

What do they cost, when compared to the price of an IHI or GT28RS upgrade?

Who does them?

What are the performance gains?

Is it a straight fit on or does other internals (Gearbox, Clutch, engine pipework etc) need changing?

The car is already Revo'd but a trip to JBS for Customm Code phase 2 would be on the cards for something like this if/when I get something done.

As I said at the begining, im just after advice, and want to know how many pennies I need to put aside to give my Bertha a bit more thump.

Cheers in advance!

Hybrid is meant to spool up a bit quicker than 'just' a big fat turbo, whilst giving you levels of boost that a 'big one' could give you.

So less lag I suppose. Dunno if they're better in any other sense. The turbo itself shouldnt need anything else changing but of course if you go over a certain amount of power/torque you may find the rest of the drive train can't handle it.

Do you want over 300 or less than?

If less do you want 250 or 290?

K04,E05 250/60. 290+ IHI & GT28 very low tune + some running gear enhancements.

If more do you want 301 or 380?

Either way Internals (pistons, rods, valves), transmission, pipes IHI or gt28rs are current hot options. Of course others exist and some are just rumourware.

The amount of torque steer I have now from say 220bhp (conservative) is enough to warrant a LSD, plus some fringe benefits. I have uprated my clutch, whats going to go next is on stuck on my mind.

I'd think about E05, Gt28 or IHI, so you go spend as little as 2k or the thick end of 10k.

Why don't you have a pootle in one of the "as much as you can do it" RS's before changing turbo's that exist?

I dont think this kinda post belongs in Ask a tech, I will reply to it if its in other sections. I'm trying to keep this section for problems people are facing rather than modifications etc. I alos cant help with prices, that is best left to the tuners.

Moved accordingly, ta :)

Cheers

Cheers for the info...

Ok then, for first base, whats the max a standard vRS Turbo can be pushed to?

I'm talking map, zorst, air filter and other bits before turn to a larger blower.

I would say around 250bhp max is the most you can realisticly go with bolt on mods and a remap. You could always get NoS...thats my next option tbh once the handling is sorted which should see a 50hp boost (I wouldn't use a 100 shot tbh).

I was chatting to Sarah about the GT28 and a very rough estimate was around the 5k mark...before I even think about going down that road alot of 'strengthening' needs to be done. Clutch, brakes, engine internals etc etc etc.

Figures depend on rollers...

I always go low and take physical advice from manf's...therin lies about 230/40 from the k03(s) with add on's (might be 250 or more at some places, or less at others ;) )

Big turbo con'vs cost money...there are a few conversions in rumour mode from 2k, but even for these I would still consider internals and valve replacements.

K04/E05 is about the limit for changes without doing these internals, but you always run a increased risk of it going pop.

I've got about as much out of mine as I'm going to get. The last 15 or so and the way it's delivered has changed the car. I was considering a 300 mod, I think 260/70 will be fine and usable, but will need the diff changing I think...wet roads power down and hold on, touch that line and eek...I know this will be compunded by a lsd, but hey the dry, smooth performance will offset that.

Below are my mods which will take me up to the end or the year.

  • Blueflame DP and Sports cat (Next couple of weeks)

  • EVOshield Intake Gasket & ABD CAI (Next Couple of Months)

  • Custom Code Stage 2 or Revo Stage 2 (Not sure on this one as I dont know of anyone on here thats had Revo Stage 2)

  • Brake Upgrade of some sort

We'll have to see what performance figures I'll be running on the above to see where we go next.

Primey,

I'll get you a RR of mine as the only difference really is the Forge FMIC, although that is a big difference :)
