Understeer

Featured Replies

Recently I have noticed that my Vrs is staring to understeer when I push it into corners.

I am not ure if this is because I have got settled in the car (I have had it a year now) and am going into corners a bit quicker, whether I have got a mechanical issue, or whether the Vrs is naturally understeery when driving spiritedly,

Any pointers would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the world of Understeer. As you said you are probably going faster as you have got used to the car. Also it's getting colder so you will generally find less grip. Most front wheel drive cars will understeer when pushed and the VRS is no exception. As long as everything is mechanically sound then you can dial it out and make a more neutral handling car. The cheapest way to do this will be to fit a whiteline rear anti roll bar. It all depends how deep your pockets are and how far you want to go ?

/\ What he said!

Also, if you have different make tyres front and rear, they may respond differently to cooler conditions and/or to the wetter and/or greasier roads common this time of year.

Understeer is used by manufacturers as a method to slow you down and give a more easily controllable car in skid conditions - basically wash the front out before flipping the tail

The source of the understeer can be found in the geometry of your front suspension, specifically the wishbone geometry, which is not adjustable

Adjustable topmounts are the cheapest direct solution specfically for targetting understeer alone

Wishbones can also be upgraded, but this is expensive and involved and not a 1st step mod

The rear arb is the logical first step though

Yeah, honestly unless you are really engaged in driving your car and feel a good connection with it, a bit of understeer is no harm. It's much slower to occur, easier to correct and safer (for people not expecting it) than a car that oversteers.

Make sure you have good tyres at the correct pressure all round, match front and rear axels.

Then start looking at mods, they're pointless till you get the basics right. Best thing you can do is to try get a spin in somebody elses car that is modified to see the difference. I had Dunlop SportMaxx RTs (grippy) on the front and some hard cheap Kormorans on the back with a H&R rear anti roll bar, it oversteers alot with that setup.

It is good fun but the rear of an octavia is pretty heavy in comparison to others using the same chassis, so you don't want it moving around too much.
