Air Conditioning Condenser

Featured Replies

I have a 2002 Fabia 1.9Tdi estate which has done 92k. It needs a new Air con condenser as it is split and leaking.

I see from a previous post that the repair would also require a regass and the cost is likely to be in the region of £500. In a previous Air con post a member suggested removing the air con system completely, thus avoiding such a hefty bills.

I rarely use my air con and would be quite happy to do without it. Even though the car is in excellent condition and the engine is still superb, it is worth very little due to it's age, and as I intend to keep it until it is virtually worthless I would not lose out on resale value.

Is such a procedure possible without affecting anything else and roughly what is it likely to cost please?

If your A/C doesnt work there is no need to get rid of it.

The A/C compressor has a clutch inside so when the A/C is off the pulley is not turning the compressor so its basically just another free wheeling pulley not affecting fuel consumption etc.

If you do press the A/C button the compressor still wont work because you have no gas in the system. The amount of gas is monitered by the A/C pressure switch. If the pressure is below a certain amount (ie you dont have enough gas in the system or a leak so the pressure cannot build up) then it sends a message to the A/C control unit which then cuts power to the A/C compressor.

So in short you are losing nothing by leaving the A/C system connected when it doesnt work :)

That decides it!

Thanks a lot for the information, I will do without Air-con and save myself £500.

Cheers.
