My Paint is coming off!

Nobody wants to be hit with unexpected bills but I am sure you don't really think that would be an acceptable way to cover this one!

Your excess may only be £100 but I expect it could affect your next premium and doing something like this is why insurance costs get higher all the time :(  I do hope Skoda sorts it out for you.

Agree.

My Superb's Bumper peeled - but it was less than 3 years old and they re-sprayed it without any issue.. They measured the paint depth with a meter and sent photos to Skoda - this is not un-common across the VAG range (mine was a 2010 car)

These frequently recurring posts about what looks to be quite a serious issue with Yetis (or maybe Skoda more generally?) are concerning - particularly with one on order.

I'd like to think that Skoda have resolved the problem now, but there's no way of knowing, really.  It amazes me that it arose in the first place, if there's any kind of quality control in place!

Perhaps a good reason to extend the warranty from 3 to 5 years, if that's going to cover the paintwork as well as mechanical issues (though it probably doesn't).

By the time My Octavia went it was 110,000 miles, with many, many stone chips, and this had not happened so i dont think its a skoda-wide issue. My Fabia is fine too although less chipped. In both cases the affected area has the clear plastic foil to protect it.

Its disappointing and shouldn't happen but theres nothing i can do now. Just hope that skoda agree to pay at least some of the cost otherwise it will be out with the flexible friend :)

Nope, its a VAG issue - across all the VW, Audi, Skoda and Seat models, at some point in time, there's been a problem with Paint..

See Here for my post - Here's another from the Superb forum too.. and more.. one more for luck?

I'm old enough to remember when VW stood for quality - but that was a long time ago.  These days their place in the reliability league tables is something they should be ashamed of, but they're too big to care now.  Thank God everything in life isn't as reliable as a Volkswagen!

Staggered to see the high rate of VWs failing their first MOT - one of the worst brands out there for that.

You remember the Access credit card as well then. It was my first credit card back in the 70's, and were very "Happy Days" back then.

I was thinking the same thing. Hopefully never have to find out but even if the paint isn't specifically covered it must put you in a better position for a goodwill repair or perhaps a decent contribution. But I'm firmly in the camp that at £600 for the extra two years it was the one option I wasn't going to do without.

Paint started flaking of the bonnet of our previous 2010 Fabia II FL at around two years old. Paint was checked with a depth gauge to make sure it was to factory spec and that we hadn't had it resprayed. Also told by the dealer that Skoda had no record of any remedial paint work prior to delivery. So purely a factory issue which took time to show up, although the paint had been very prone to chipping from quite early on.

Hope you get it sorted,

TP

Looking at the pictures.it looks like a bad paint job by the dealers prior to you buying the car.

Looking at the door and the door frame, you can see that they are a different shade'

I had my previous Yeti for 3 yrs,not a mark nor bubble and It did not have the foils.

As other's have mentioned,it looks like filler without primer.... Skoda primer is the colour of a cream, not grey

makes me think it has been repaired before you bought it!

Thanks but perhaps the photos don't show the area that well. there's no filler or primer - the 'grey' area is bare metal. Theres also no doorframe in the shot - its all door. Its a bit smeary in the affected area where theres a little water/car shampoo left as I was rinsing it off at the time.

I had a similar problem with our Octavia when about 3 years old. Following a car wash by  a garage team using a pressure washer I returned home to find the paint had gone down to bare metal on the near side rear wheel arch, very similar sized to yours. There was also some flaking off on the rear bumper. I am not sure if it was the pressure washer lance too close to the bodywork that caused it or just a poor paint adhere. It was repainted OK after a lot of argument but no explanation of what Skoda put it down too was ever mentioned

Would this be covered by the paintwork guarantee or is it only for corrosions?

Skoda have said no, so I'm going to get it sorted myself. Anyone recommend a good body shop in Shropshire? :)

Bit further away but "Fix" in Hereford 01432 265200 are excellent, they used to be Cavanaghs.

They gave me the use of a car for a week while mine was being done ,also Skoda  approved.

Used them couple times over the years and excellent job done each time.

I washed mine last night (in the dark) and it appears I may have a similar problem!

Interestingly it is on a door that was resprayed under warranty when the foils were fitted.

I shall have a better look later.

Had a look before I left for work, and I think it might be a large stone chip, as it is teardrop shape and not in the same area. Shall stick some primer on it for now.

Just for info really, I had the door resprayed by a local bodyshop for £80 all in. They did not do the whole door though as skoda were wanting to but just the affected area so hence a lot cheaper. Ive emailed SUK details of the problem, after their initial refusal to look at it via the dealer report, and asked for a contribution to the protective foils that I think should be a standard fit item to prevent this happening.

The representative i spoke to didn't seem impressed that I had had the respray done "outside of the skoda network" and was therefore not inclined to help. I did point out that where I had the respray is irrelevant in the context of missing protective foils as I am not seeking any assistance with the spray costs.

Not holding my breath!

Sigh. Car ownership shouldn’t be this hard. Or at least feel this hard!

So, I got a couple of quotes to get the paint repaired, some of which were crazy money. I eventually settled on a local place and had the re-spray done quickly as SUK had said no, and the metal was starting to rust on the surface (Should the door rust? I would have hoped not!). Paint man said I should wait a couple of weeks before having the plastic protection films applied to ensure the paint was properly hardened. So in the meantime I asked the local dealer to get them in stock and was preparing myself to apply them mentally, and simultaneously I wrote to SUK customer care with a tale of woe asked them to foot the bill for the protection film on the basis they should be standard fit.

Anyways SUK were reluctant at first as I had had the paint repaired ”outside of the skoda network” and I argued that this was irrelevant since I was no longer asking for that cost to be covered. I just wanted SUK to pay for the protection strips or make a contribution at least. The result was good and SUK agreed to pay £50 of the costs so I asked the dealer to fit them and I would pay the difference over the £50. A  small victory I told myself. I am grateful. :)

Anyway I missed the appointment to have the films fitted due to being ill over Christmas and arranged to have them applied this week instead – less than 30 days since the paint repair. Washed the car ready and found that the door was already quite badly chipped again and the paint was flaking away. Spent several minutes in a fluctuating state of shock, anger and frustration. :(

Luckily the paint repair man did the work again for free as a one-off, but he was as mystified as I was at how quickly the area had become damaged again. I had the films applied today but already the paint was chipped again. Could be the weather, the amount of ‘crap’ on the roads at present or just my bad luck but I personally think its down to a combined effort of bad car design/aerodynamics and something in the door metal. Its almost like the paint/undercoat is not adhering to the door.

I've not got a great deal of faith that this wont recur again but am hoping the film will prevent the damage getting worse. Hoping. Thinking of selling up and taking a car form the work scheme instead of the allowance!

Still, in brighter news I fixed a recurring rattle form the dash by removing a parking ticket that had slid down between the dash and the glass in the middle of the windscreen. So that's a result.

I would say that the main thing I've learned (too late as usual) is that when buying a used yeti a key thing to check is that it has the protection strips on the doors. If they are not there then check very closely for damage or repairs and budget £90 to have the strips applied.

Cheers all and HNY! :)

Similar rattle on mine, my wife actually traced it to the ticket holder whilst in the passenger seat, I could not believe it until I pressed it against the windscreen and it went away. A squirt of silicone grease behind the things seems to have sorted it

sounds like you are having a rough time of it, I've had my yeti for 4 months now and had a number of stupid little problem.

nothing that serious but its all just takes time to sort out and is frustrating.

does your yeti have the mub guards fitted?

I put mub guards on myself when I got it, before all this but the damage was probably already done.

In honesty I'm not sure what they do as that part of the rear door still gets a pasting. As does the whole of the bottom part of both doors!
