Sliding rear seats

Featured Replies

We went away for a few days last week and we needed a bit more room in the boot so I thought I'd slide the rear seats forward.....no joy...so I just moved the backrests to near vertical and that was sufficient.

Having more time I tried to move the seats this morning and I can't! I lifted the front handle....pulled the rear tag....wouldn't  budge. Took one of the seats out and fiddled with it on the bench...I cannot see how it releases...the slide handle moves but nothing seems to release on the runners.

I'm puzzled.....I like to think I am mechanically competent (brave words maybe) but even after studying the manual and reading the seat instructions.....nothing!

Am I missing something?

While I'm no weakling, I can't slide them by hand. I have to sit in them, pull the handle and engage some leg to get them to shift.

You normally have to sit on them to slide them as per what Sporky said.

Sporky and Johann.....thank you. Dead easy if you sit on them...

So whats the point in having the tape release in the boot as its nigh on impossible unless you are sitting on the seat?

Oh well I know for next time

thanks again............Nigel

Just tried both mine and they slide easily without the help of my Bum.

They do get moved a lot,so maybe it's lack of use?

Maybe I don't know my own STRENGTH...

"tape release"?  The only release from in the boot is to tip the seat backs forward.  Those releases at the base of the backrest (between the seats) do NOTHING to the release UNDER the seat that you pull up, to slide the seats...

Mine can also slide without me sitting on them.

Mine has a piece of tape next to the tip forward handle. You pull it & it lifts the handle at the front, allowing you to move the seat forward from the boot.

Will go take a piccie when I'm done with this conf call.

OK... never seen that before.  Must be something new (and something I did not notice even on the FL when I saw these in September in Frankfurt).

Yes...agreed the tape pulls the front handle up...accessible from the boot.

OK I have just tried to move them without sitting on the seat and now it's quite easy. I guess they were just stuck having never been moved before.

I have great mechanical sympathy and I suspect I was previously being too careful. I do not subscribe to the theory 'if at first you don't succeed...use a bigger hammer'. Perhaps in this case I was too sympathetic.

the tape is crude but effective...at least in lifting the release handle. It just runs in a track formed in the metal base of the seat.

Ah I see it is mentioned in the new manual (where it is called a "release loop"):

I'm still learning something every day.

Never noticed the tape because it's below the level of my boot floor.

Ian....me too as I have a spare wheel

That's made me feel better....I'm still on the first SM and you are edging closer to your third

Still its good to learn something new each day

Well... I have to say I have also learnt something new today then.  I thought this was a new feature but no, here it is in the 2010 manual:

I've also never seen this before since it is hidden behind my spare wheel.   :giggle:

 + another one here.

The tape is handy it works as an extension of the handle if you have the spare wheel, it saves you jamming your hand in the small gap between the raised boot floor and seat.

Despite knowing the theory, I was months into ownership before I needed to shift one of them.  Eventually I, too, tried while sitting on it - and it worked.  After merrily sitting and sliding back and forth for a while it became possible to move the seat without the 'sitting' bit.

By this time several of the neighbours had come to watch

I'm really not sure if publish that my successful test of the seat sliding was undertaken in the garage with the door closed.

Well I've published it now.......what a weight off my mind!

Haha - I think if I tried this, I would be carted away to the nuthouse as the final straw

I might have this wrong, I could not lift my right hand seat up, the left seat was OK, evan the garage did not know, then we found the problem, the seat must be right back for the the catch to release the seat to the vertical. then if you wish you can remove the seat or slide it.

Correct. You can't tip either of the outer seat bases vertical if they are not slid all the way back.
