the dreaded light came on this morning

Featured Replies

on my way to work at 6.00 this morning and the dam engine management light came on !!

no i said (well words a little stronger)

so called the garage where i bought it from and told me to take it in after work. took it in about 2.30 they checked it out and said it might be the 'exhaust emissions valve' (think that was it) but no number came up on their computer to confirm this ,so they said it could been a power surge on the computer.

the computer was reset and i was off on my way,1 hour later the light came back on, so i phoned the garage and they said they'll order the part.

does anyone know if its a big job replacing the 'exhaust emission valve'

ps bought only 6 weeks ago with 3 months warrenty so don't have to pay :)

Exhaust Emmision Valve??

Maybe the EGR?? Exhaust Gas Recirculation Valve.

Shouldn't be too much of a worry if the garage are sorting it. Make sure to get a copy of any invoices.

any reason in particular (i know its going to be something really obvious but i've had a long day and my brain is frazzled!) :)

for your records. It helps keep the FSH up and you know what has and hasn't been done should you need to prove it when you go to sell it.

well that's what I'm guessing

It also makes sure that the garage does the work they say they're going to ;) If they're paying you don't want them cutting any corners! :D

With regards to invoices, my local, Crawley Down won't give out an invoice for warranty work. So it always seems like I am missing history. In fact they threw the history that came with my Fabia for me. When I went in with the Clio to part-ex it, the salesperson just threw the lot away in front of me. Everything, all the receipts for things like brakes, services, the lot.

Dealers will sometimes throw away history if they don't want you to know something.

The reason I say to get an invoice or record for warranty work is exactly as stated, for your records. You will not only know what has been done but also may have a comeback if it goes wrong again.

I used to ask my VW dealer for an invoice for the warranty work that they carried out on my VW Golf. They obliged and used to print one for me, the amount payable was always

Mmmm, never have asked for an invoice before and never have really seen the point. However, can see there may be some issues if and when you come to sell, not that i personally can see any  Just get any work done under warranty and you yourself will know that the niggles are dealt with, if that makes sense :confused:Well i know what i mean, ish!! :hat:

You should get a warranty 'slip' from Spar****ts. We do.

I like to keep all receipts... just nice to see a folder full of paperwork. Shows the car is looked after.

got it confirmed this morning by the garage,it is the EGR valve which has bust.the dealer doesn't have one in stock so will be next week now.

would this not working affect the performance of my car ??

thanks

I've just had a new EGR valve fitted because the light kept coming on. The Garage assured me that it was reporting a faulty valve each time, hence it needed replacing.

Took SWMBO's 1.4 16v into the stealers last week because the engine management light came on. There had been a noicable lack of power for a week before hand. Steelers said that the cam belt tensioners were worn out and had affected the cambelt thus the timing. Picked it up today, supposedly had new belt & tensioners (no reciept available), told to check the water level in the morning, got 2 miles up the road and guess what?! Engine management light back on!

So back to the Stealers tomorrow! Well hacked off as they have my Octy vRS as well at the moment!!

Can't wait to see what's wrong this time! Guess I will have to wait & see what the diagnostics say, but anyone got any favorit ideas? Power seemsed slightly better on way home & there have been no other symptoms as far as I know, although I do think that I have had to use slightly more oil than usual over the last 2 months (mentioned this to them).

I had my cam belts + tensioners done last week and the dealer paid. But I didnt get an invoice so Im waiting for them to sort it and I think they are waiting for me to forget they owe me one. :o

Back from Stealers, and an EGR code logged this time. However Service manager has suggested that I carry on for 500 miles and monitor the oil usage as he suspects that the "EGR is only the symptom of the car having piston ring failure and thus the MAF getting oily". He told me that they have had this problem cropping up again recently.

As I understand it, the oil consumption will be the clincher. So here goes for an uneasy 500 miles!!

Could always drain it a touch... ;)

Definitely sounds like rings though fella, especially with it being a well documented problem.

Thanks, just confirms what I feared! Think the oil will do a good job of reducing by it's self! I always check it once weekly and only top up if needed. This time it needed 400mls after covering 200 miles in 4 weeks! I think VW allow 1L of oil per 1000 miles as the maximum oil usage, so guess it will be the same for Skoda.

It also seems sluggish, (although the cam belts & tensioners made a little improvement) and it's a good job it's cooler as using the air con can cause it to bog down easily! It has also had a tendency of make a "pinking" noise when under load in high gears, but again this seemed better after the cam belt was fitted!

Guess It's wait and see time!!:D

Took SWMBO's car back to the dealers last week. It had used about 800mls in 500miles:eek: ! So cutting a long story short, head off and piston rings replaced. However I have no proof that it has been done, if you know what I am saying! :worried: So i'll be monitoring the oil use again and praying that the engine management light doesn't come on again! SWMBO drove it today and did think it was a little bit more "perky", but I intend to give it a good run tomorrow, so we will see!!

Ok, so I set off on a 120 mile trip this morning & 12.5 miles in, you guessed it....... the engine management light is back on  & the car feels gutless again :( So back to the stealers again in the morning!

Can't wait to see what they tell me this time!!

Not much luck then... Keep persisting though, and GET A BLOODY RECEIPT!!!

Back from Dealers, and No fault code recorded, despite light being on:( Anyone got any ideas? I've got the feeling that the dealer is not bothering to find an answer:(
