the dreaded light came on this morning

Featured Replies

Ended up back at the dealers again this morning, light on and car gutless again. Fault code found "EGR fault flow rate too low". I was told that they would do a more detailed diagnistic, and that this produced "14 pages to be worked through" including "taking the ECU out & checking all the connections". Have to take it back again next week!

Anyonee got any ideas about whats going on here?? Cos I haven't!!

Hi there new to this website. I had a problem with my EML continuially coming on and every time this was showing that it was the EGR valve. I had it replaced two years ago. Earlier in the year it started coming on again and saying that it was the EGR valve again.... still on going but someone told my old man that this could be connected to the piston rings and that there was a recall for this on Fabia's. Does anyone know about this ?

Probably best to post what variant of Fabia you have (ie 1.4 8v / 16v etc).

Some one will be along in a min to help you out probably

Start a new thread mate, but yes, piston rings on the 1.4 16v is a common problem :thumbdwn:

Mines back now and feels like a new car! Fault traced to a blocked sensor pipe from the inlet manifold!!! However the day after I collected it the service light came on!!

Quote from the dealers £245 for a 20k service, they were even going to change the oil & filter again after 150 miles!! So not only were they £60 more than any other dealer, they were no doubt going to charge for oil & filter they weren't going to need!!

Ho Hum!

Anyway get the codes read, but check out if they have fully diagnosed the fault and not just believed the computer. Mine ended up having cam belt & followers, and piston rings replaced before a blocked pipe was found to be the actual cause! Repair of the blocked pipe; £35, I won't tell you the cost of all the rest, but it will be a quiet christmas in the Bulgaria household this year!!

Where the pistion rings actually faulty?

I dont think they were helping, but they weren't the cause of the fault. I was told that they "hadn't really failed" but that they had "lined up on 2 cylinders because they were a bit slack", so as all the cost had been incurred having to take the head off & put it back on again, for the couple of quid they cost, they may as well be done!

Thanks for that I'm waiting for the rings to fail on the wifes 2001, 1.4 AUA engine.

So I'm looking to find out how likely that is and what sort of cost/work is involved.

I'm a bit puzzled when you said remove the cylinder head, I would have thought they needed to remove the sump and disconnect the con rods from the crankshaft then drop the pistions out from the bottom to replace the rings, maybe the pistions can only be extracted from the top?

Good point! Only quoting what the service manager told me! All of a sudden I fancy another chat with him about all this!!

As you say they will have had to drop the sump to undo the con rods, there was no mention of removing the crank, so guess they would have to remove the head if that was the case.

on my way to work at 6.00 this morning and the dam engine management light came on !!

no i said (well words a little stronger)

so called the garage where i bought it from and told me to take it in after work. took it in about 2.30 they checked it out and said it might be the 'exhaust emissions valve' (think that was it) but no number came up on their computer to confirm this ,so they said it could been a power surge on the computer.

the computer was reset and i was off on my way,1 hour later the light came back on, so i phoned the garage and they said they'll order the part.

does anyone know if its a big job replacing the 'exhaust emission valve'

ps bought only 6 weeks ago with 3 months warrenty so don't have to pay :)

THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT IS WRONG WITH FABIA TOO! Please tell me what you ended up doing about this? I have just carried on, driving around in mine for the last 2 years, after being told by SKODA in Cramlington, that it wasn't serious, and isn't necessary. I wonder why the valve exists then? ANyway, I just never replaced it, but am thinking about changing to vRS from my 1.4 16v next year, and if I decide to sell, then I will want it sorted before sale. SO, PLEASE SHARE WITH MNE YOUR EXPERIENCE ? mail me on? [email protected]

Forgot to add, that I too seem to use lots of oil, at least a litre a month, and there's a horrible creamy gunge all around the filler cap..., it's sounding nasty, but there's no loss of POWER (thank god) and I get a great return in MPG. The last garage I asked in about the gunk, he said something along the lines of short journeys, but as I do a 65 mile round trip a day, 17, 000 a year, there's no such thing as lots of short journeys. ANY IDEAS? PLEASE>>> thanks X
