Superb diesel losing power!?

I have a 2009 Superb 1.9Tdi. Recently it has lost power on 2 different occasions and the engine management light has come on, thus my wife could noly use limp home mode to get the car home safely.Phoned the AA who put it onto diagnostic and said it was something to do with the electrics, but it would be like looking for a needlein a haystack. Same thing happened to my brother in law, he took it to a garage in Dundee (where he was when it happened) and they fitted 3 coils and their car has been perfect since. Are there common faults to look for?...sound familiar to anyone?
