Small Problem with starting of Felicia MPI engine

Featured Replies

Hi i have a small problem with my felicia engine when starting.

When i turn the ignition on and try to start the engine the following happens:

The starter motor  engages the flywheel but instantly disengages.

After about maybe 2 - 3 tries it stays engaged and manages to start the engine with no problems at all.

Although the starter disengages i can still hear the motor turning.

Does anyone know what could possibly be wrong?

I was thinking that maybe the starter motor has some problem.

We are also thinking that maybe the throttle body is not fully closing so the ecu thinks that it started.

Your help is much appreciated.

I would discount it being a throttle body problem, It wouldn't cause that kind of problem. I think it will be something more of a basic electrical problem.

it sounds like either a dodgy ignition switch with a start terminal sticking or the starter motor solenoid is faulty.

Thanks for replying.

The Starter motor worked fine some few weeks ago so it might be that the solenoid is faulty and not the ignition switch.

hopefully i will find the source of the problem.

Sounds like a faulty starter solenoid.

But, try whacking a jump lead between battery negative and the block. I had a poor earth yesterday when I'd swapped the engine causing a similar one.

hmm well i put like 3 earth cables connected to the engine block but i am going to try that too fingers crossed!

Try connecting a bulb to the solenoid wire and operate the ignition switch, if the bulb fails to light up, the ignition switch will be at fault.

Hi, just a quick update.

Found the problem.. turned out to be the starter's clutch.. bought a second hand starter and installed it.. :D now works like a charm.
