Smelly washers!

Featured Replies

When I use screen washers they stink inside the car like cat wee!!!!, always use concentrated screen wash additive and top up regularly.

Any ideas why or how to get rid of this awful smell please.

Drain out your washer tank, preferably by removing, you will most likely find a jelly like residue in the bottom. Do you use your washers a lot, also some additives do smell. I always add a little Milton sterilizing soluttion, this stops the sediment. Some tap water reacts with additives, I always use zero part per million filtersed water, almost the same quality of de-ionised water, and a few drops of Milton. If it is safe to use on baby feeders it is safe for your car.

I get the smell to. More of a disinfectant smell thou. Can't say it really bothers me. Only ever need to use my washers in winter so that's the only Time I get the smell.

What brand and what mix ratio?

Too much or too little can cause this with some brands prone to it which is why I use ready mixed.

flush it out with a solution of mouthwash

I always mix Screen Wash with water from the tumble dryer in the garage

My old Primera bottle used to really stink, It was a stagnant water smell,.. I used sterilising fluid to clean out the bottle, Now i only use Shell concentrate screen wash, It's the only one i have found that doesn't make the water pong after a while and it's the only screen wash i every use in the Octy, Good stuff and not a bad price

If you don't want to remove the tank You can stick a hose into the bottle and flush it out for 5 minutes. Then siphon out as much water as you can and refill with decent screenwash.

I use VAG screenwash neat which gives good cleaning power and frost protection and works out at about £12 for 20 litres from TPS.

The VAG stuff is actually really rather good 4 quid a litre or so but used neat has a ridiculous -70-odd degree freezing point. I always buy a few bottles when at the dealers for a service and keeps me going for a good long while 0.5 litres wash to 2 litres water ratio and hasnt frozen on me yet

Thanks for all the replies, given me a few options to try and sort problem out.

I wouldn't use Milton as has been suggested. It discolours some plastics& rubber and others makes them brittle.

I'll show you our youngests bottles that have gone from clear to white

Gold Star chip shop onion vinegar. Acetic acid to stop your blades smearing along with vag screenwash. Lovely odour which will remind you to go home via the chippy.
