iPhone and standard fit Bluetooth phone equipment - vRS

Featured Replies

I imagine that this has been covered before...

What level of functionality does an iPhone have with the standard fit audio and phone equipment in a vRS? What does having the iPhone specific option add to this?

Just the call function and music playback via Bluetooth. It does allow voice dialing through the steering wheel.

To access your contacts you need to go through the head unit. The Maxi-Dot only displays a recent call list and not your whole contact list.

Siri works via the home button and uses the car's mic etc however the car's voice control kicks in if you select voice control from either the steering wheel or stereo.

As for music etc, I can play/pause and skip with bluetooth however I can't select specific music etc.  My understanding is if you get the ami/mitsumi option and the right cable (there are at least 2x 30 pin cables for iPhone 4s and below, for the iPhone 5 and 5s there is now a cable for lightning however very little info about it yet) gives you full stereo control over playback of files on the iPhone.

If you are just looking for basic connectivity for calls and streaming of audio I personally wouldn't recommend the AMI/Mitsumi connection even though it's only £100.  I do sometimes wish I'd gone for the bluetooth+ to boost the signal however it's not a major issue.

As for the bluetooth, what it does do is excellent - audio and call quality is very good.  My only wish is it was easier to select which mobile the car connects to as it just picks the last phone it was connected to (not great if you share a car and give each other lifts).

Picked ours up tonight and within three minutes my wife had her 4s working, streaming music and doing the phone thing brilliantly. Very clever.

Oh sorry, just on the standard Bluetooth.

How have you got Siri working?

I've got my iPhone 5 running iOS7 all working fine with music streaming and making calls....but when I hold the home button to activate Siri, Siri's voice doesn't come through the speakers and the car mic isn't sending my voice to the phone.

I'm aware of the little Bluetooth button on the screen for Siri but I have my car selected. I have a Columbus if it makes any difference.

Thanks.

Lol, i didn't know anyone even used Siri.

Works really well - especially bluetooth music streaming. I download playlists to spotify on my iphone. I play them and when the car turns off it pauses the music on the phone... when I get back in the car the system automatically reconnects and starts playing where it left off. Brilliant and simple. My old columbis did the same, but didn't auto start so you had to wait for it to connect and then fiddle about with the phone to get it playing.

I really don't think you need the cable. I certainly don't as it does everything I need it to.

Siri works well when you need to use the phone but can't hold it.

Driving, walking etc. I use Siri many times per day. Asking it what the time is, setting reminders when things come to mind, starting playlists. Very useful.

But how does one use it in the car through Bluetooth?

All I do is press and hold the home button.

Has anyone found a setting where the car or phone will read out a text? I don't know if iPhone can do that but I know other phones can

All I do is press and hold the home button.

So you press and hold and the initial 2 beeps come through the car speakers?

Yes.

Allow the phone to connect to the car and press/hold home button.

You will get the two beeps and Siri through the car speakers. Siri will use the car mics.

On the admundsen the only indication I get is the music has stopped and a green phone icon in the top right

Tried this on mine today and it works a treat, still not sure what i'd ever use siri for...

I used to use it on my old car for speaking SMS but I haven't got a mount sorted for the octy. Just checked when I got the car it worked.

Thanks, I tried it again, the music pauses and then nothing. No beeps from Siri and no input from the car mic. When I cancel Siri, music starts playing from the phone again.

I know the car speakers and mic are fine as I can make and receive calls.

How odd.

That's weird, mine works fine.

Hi all,

In my Oct, running a combo of the main lead from the bolero head unit mitsumi with 30 pin to lightning into a iphone 5s.

The main advantage over Bluetooth I've found is that the Selection tab comes alive, accesses the full playlists/artists/albums/songs.

Siri does work and comes through the sound system, I'm able to give Siri the command "Read Text Message" then it will pull the inbox and then going through voice commands to read it. Translations through the car mics seem to work fine.

Brian

Brian,

Have you managed to get iphone 5 working through mitsumi?

Hi,

Mine 5s seems fine, I know my brother has used his 5 in the octavia and no issues that we've found

Hi Farsider I want to do the same and have the same problem.

I press the home button, Siri starts... but no signals / no voice from the car mics :(

I have also the Columbus. It seems that it only works on the amundsen ???!!!

Probably you have already a solution for that?

The problem is that the car doesn't know to switch to "phone". It interrupts the music but nothing else happens...

Hopefully someone has a solution or workaround for Siri and the Columus.

btw: I have iPhone 5s

Brian,

What kind of cable are you using? I just bought one from ebay (with white collar) but it doesnt works...

No cable, Bluetooth.

No cable, Bluetooth.

Brian is using some cable... "30 pin to lightning into a iphone 5s."
