Cracking value at Halfords

Featured Replies

I bought a few things the other day, including some berry scented screen wash (Mrs FW says the normal stuff smells like cat pee). On the way out I noted they had some the same but concentrated, for only 50p more.

During the week I went to Sainsbury's and there was a Halfords next door, I thought I would get some more screen wash as I had ended up using all that I purchased over the weekend.

Now knowing to look for the concentrated stuff I grabbed 5lts, I had a quick look to see what the concentration was

Bit blurry, but at 100% it works to -10

and the ready mixed at 50p less

So it appears that all you get for the additional 50p is a silver bottle, rather than a standard plastic one thumbdown.gif  Glad I checked

Lidl's screenwash (~£5,99 for 5 litres) can be diluted and works down as far as 0Kelvin IIRC but it's a bit overpowering. I just get the stuff from TPS now. I paid £2.69 with the VAT for 5 litres and at 1 part screenwash to 5 parts water it's good for -5oC or for -10oC dilute 1:1

That's 10 litres at -10 for £2.69 :)

Poundland stuff mixed with water. Sorted

I've had the normal halfords stuff freeze even when undiluted. Their super concentrated stuff which is good for -20 is better but way more expensive than the lidl stuff, though it does in bubblegum flavour.

But does it smell like cat's pee?

no, it's quite pleasant, not as overpowering as the Lidl stuff :)

Am I being a bit dense here?

For 50p more you could have 5 litres of concentrated screenwash (which would make a minimum of 10 litres or double the amount at 1:1 dilution of the 5 litre ready mixed stuff that goes straight in your reservoir with no mixing...

And that's bad because...?

ready mixed and concentrated both work at -10 straight out of the bottle, so they are both the same.

poundworld ready mix stuff and in winter I get a little from the work( work at a moving, shipping and storage company)

I knew I'd missed something!

Looks like the concentrated one is good value for summer then...

Don't like the smell of this one anyway!

£1 at my local tesco's from the machine outside. Enough to fill a 5l screenwash tank

Simples

Basically the concentrated stuff isn't concenrated then.

I pay £4.99 for 5L at my local car spares shop which i sort of dilute.

Asda, as with just about everything else, is cheaper than the other supermarkets and the quality is good.

They were doing 2.5 litres of screen concentrate for £1.95 or two for £2.50 ie 5 litre but it does say freezing point is only -5 C so may ahve to find something better in the next few weeks as we got almost -20C a couple of winters ago.

doesn't the concentrated work at -10 when diluted? you end up with more (double?) screen wash of equal performance for 50p extra?

No it says -10 at 100%

This ^^

The halfords website says it's good for minus 10 when diluted down to 5:1 thus making it better value

I still wouldn't buy it :D
