Clunky or notchy gear change from 2nd to 1st and sometimes 1st to 2nd...

Featured Replies

I had a new dmf and clutch in the summer but the clunky/notchy gear change from 2nd to 1st and sometimes from 1st to 2nd is still there, any suggestions to what is going on? Could it need transmission oil or is the gear box on it's way out?

It's a 2005/55 2.0 tdi Sport PD 140 manual with only 69,700 on the clock.

I'm yet to drive a car that's not a bit notchy 2nd to 1st.

Are you changing to 1st whilst still travelling at some speed? If you wait until you are completely stopped before you change is it less trouble?

Ye I'm fully aware of that and it's definitely something else, it can be a significant clunk which I feel through the pedals but I've also heard it when the window is down. It doesn't happen all the time which is odd.

does the change improve when the oil is warmed up? as non VAG gearbox oil can make the change very notch when cold

VAG gearboxes are very fussy about using the genuine VAG gearbox oil as it is specific VAG spec and is very thin.

All 3 of my Octavia's including my current TDI CR and a Jetta before them felt a bit 'grindy' from first to second, especially when cold. Must be a characteristic of that type of VW box.

From what I understand my car has never had a gearbox oil change and I'm assuming it still has the same oil that it had when it left the factory 8 yrs ago. I changed the dmf and clutch because it was slipping and thought that would have cured the issue with 1st and 2nd but clearly it hasn't.

The car does it warm and cold so it can't be the oil thickness, odd that it's intermittent tho :-\

I noticed 1st to 2nd was getting a little noisy on our 2008 Octavia Scout.

Had the dealer swap out the gearbox oil at its last service (£60) and it feels much, much better. Not perfect but a lot better than before.

That's what I've been thinking of doing after watching Ed China on Wheeler Dealers, what a guy!

no harm giving it a go as it's probably a bit black at that age anyway but get the VAG oil from the dealerships, I think it cost around £15 bottle and you will need at least 2 bottles

Cheers, will do for sake of £30.
