too late to turn the wick up?

Featured Replies

Having found myself lusting after R32's, A3 3.2's and S4's I thought there might be a cheaper cure for my itchy feet.

After 5.5 years of virtually trouble free motoring, thoughts of a change are creeping in to my mind.

So to refresh the interest, a stage 1 from Shark might be on the cards.

Is this asking for trouble at 92k on a tfsi? What's the concensus?

as long as its has and will be maintained correctly it should be absolutely fine.

My 2.0 TFSI vRS was mapped by Angel Tuning at 98,000 miles. Now on 108,000 and hasn't missed a beat bar coil packs (common fault).

I service the car every 3,000 miles or 6 months; whichever comes first.

Pulls like a train. Do it, you won't regret it.

I thought about going down the R32 route but the £475.00 a year tax put me off.

It's been run on the variable service regime rather than fixed to date. Due again in about 3k. Worth swapping to fixed if I get it remapped or don't bother?

I was more concerned about getting one that ended up with stretched timing chains and a resulting large bill than the VED! Great engine note though.

You can get an R32 from just prior to the VED changes, caps it at £260 I think. Friend had one. She sold it when she has her sprog but she still pines for another. R32 that is.

The R32 won't feel that much faster, but it has a far superior power plant in terms of noise and refinement. Much better power train too.

A map will make the VRS quicker than the 32 but it exposes its chassis and drivetrains weakness. Traction becomes an issue in damp conditions but after 30mph the 32 won't live with it.

S4 will be in a league above, that's for everything though including running costs! I know someone that ran one for 6 years and he was constantly skint!

A map will be fine on the mileage. First things to go are usually coil packs if they are old and then your clutch.

would be worth switching to fixed servicing also.

Thanks for the input guys, appreciated.

I've had my 1.8tsi on Bluefin since 50,000km.  I'm now on 125,000km.  About the only thing you might want to do is change the coil packs as cheap insurance.  I fitted some OEM Audi R8 units to mine - cheap as chips @ AUD $140 for 4 delivered from ECS tuning USA. VW AU charge AUD180 each for stock units (effing robbers).

It's only after changing them that I realised the original ones might not have been firing 100% at motorway speeds as I've improved my economy by about 5%.

I've tried to leave this car alone but have got the bug again & have just bought a Golf R intercooler (32mm up to 38mm core) & am thinking about a downpipe with 200 cell cat as well.

edit: Aussie cars are all on fixed 15,000km services.  I get the dealer to do the scheduled ones & I do a quick interim oil & filter in between.  It probably doesn't need it but for <AUD100 it's peace of mind.

In the last 12 months (100,000km??) I fitted Koni Yellow dampers & it runs Eibach springs made for a diesel wagon - except I have a petrol sedan.  They didn't drop the car that much but the spring rate is awesome - especially having that bit extra in the tail end.
