Whys my insurance so expensive?

Featured Replies

Hi I'm 20, 21 on 31st this month. Drive a Fabia 02 1.4 mpi 8v. My insurance is up in January so been shopping around trying to find the cheapest possible quote why can't I find anything cheaper than this...

Annual price

if single payment

£1685.56

Annual total

if paid monthly

£1857.39

Deposit £421.39 Monthly rate £179.50 x 8

It's ridiculous anybody have any idea why mine is so much? I've got no points or anything. Most people I know my age have been got cheaper insurance on Fiesta STs so why is it more expensive to insure a 1.4?

any help on getting the insurance down would be grateful thanks in advance :)

Two simple reasons:

1. Your age...you're under 25

2. Your Post code

Have you spoken to all of the sponsors on here?

Is the Fabia completely stock?

going on moneysupermarket and asking those meerkats isn't an exhaustive search there are many more insurers out there that don't list on these.

You'll be hit bad for your age and postcode as ChrisRs says.

Im 22 (21 when i got the insurance sorted) i got 650ish for a 1.9TDI Fabia with only 1 year driving. Must be something to do with your Postcode more than your age?

ChrisRS-Yeah I understand the age and postcode will affect me a lot but my mate had a Fiesta ST he's a year younger than me, lives on the same estate and his insurance is around £950

Sparkly-I rang a couple of them and they said they are unable to give me a quote as it's not close enough to the date my insurance expires which is 26th Jan, I'm hoping they will quote me less than that as it's really expensive

Crazydunc-I would love my insurance to be that price mines nearly triple that amount haha. I just don't understand how a 1.4 can be so expensive to insure. My postcode isn't the worst but isn't the best but my mates is cheaper than mine on a car with nearly double the litres and 140bhp doesn't make sense to me

Thanks for the info :) I'm going to ring round a couple more of the sponsors see if they can help me out

My insurance is up next month and I had an email asking me to confirm I still wanted the renewal quote electronically so think they don't send them out unless there's less than a month to go as prices could change in the mean time. If you live with your parents and one of them has a clean licence no claims etc the price will normally be lower if you add them as a named driver (but you remain the main driver/policy holder)

Right so I will be best waiting for the renewal then ring around?

I didn't think putting my parents on as named and me a main would help i will try and see if makes difference they both have clean license and loads of no claims cheers mate I appreciate the help

That will certainly give some reduction.  My OH got her licence after we met, in her first year having me on her policy was near £400 reduction.

Also think that closer to the renewal things should get more competitive.

Out of interest what was last years insurance cost?  Has it gone up/down/stayed the same?

Yeah I hope it will do :)

I think I will wait for the renewal quote before I get anymore quotes then hopefully they will help drop the prices a bit

It's gone up buy over £400 was £1400 last year, I've moved house but only round the corner so postcode is still the same, I didn't think it would bunk it up £400 moving round the corner it's rather odd

Thanks for the help mate

Not just the cost by age and home postcode.

So not much point comparing with others unless you are identical and you know what they declare.

Your Job/Employment. Full or part time.

Do you use the car for your commute, to work or college.

Where do you park day time and night time. Annual Mileage you do.

Do you have a Named driver with a nice clean licence, safe job and use of another vehicle and their own insurance.

george

Put your mum on as a named driver and look around in the month before it's due.

I had the exact same car as yourself last year, I was paying £1400 until I bought a 1.2 monte which is smaller engine and slightly more powerful and when I changed my details over it dropped to £1100. My renewal for next year is £910 - winner.

Like others have said, add older people on who have been driving for donkeys, to them you won't be driving it as much because of the other people added which makes you less likely to have a bump.

21 when i took my insurance out on my 2.0 170 CR octy. Paid £540. Both parents as named drivers. Renewal price: £690 - now have 3 points (parking on zebra crossing) and plan to fit coilovers so declared them for quotes.

Right so I will be best waiting for the renewal then ring around?

No worries. Been down the same road insuring the daughter when we had a clio. Other options you can consider are taking out a multicar policy with admiral. You are the main policy holder so get the big discount and add the other cars to the policy when the renewal is due (but you can't back out until the other car is on there too so you have to wait until your policy renewal date) we used this option for the first year then moved both to get better prices. The other option is to get a black box as that will cut your policy price especially if you agree to be off the road early hours when most youngsters come a cropper.

Could even by that Fabias have suddenly become the car-du-jour for being nicked or rolled into fields or repair costs have gone up. Insurance companies use all sorts of weird statistical data to gauge what risk you are.

Don't get your hopes up for a big drop at 25 btw. I didn't see much of a difference until I hit 30.

Just be glad you're not a journalist, their job for some reason drives their premiums through the roof. Professional sportsmen are also hit hard.

Go through the comparison websites and also take a look at quidco etc you might get cash back too. Or move house.

My brother in law paid more per month to insure his BMW in London than I paid for a year for the VRS.

I can't manage to get any cheap well reasonable quotes anywhere Adrain Flux just quoted me £4000 which is ridiculous, I might try a quote on a Octavia see if there cheaper to insure than the Fabia if I'm going to be paying around £2000 I may aswell pay it on a car that's worth it

Are you employed and doing a job that puts you into a high risk bracket,.  ie Barman, Brickies,  Labourer etc ?

  • Author

Could that also be why? I'm an Engineer? Guessing that is a high risk job due to the machinery

LOL,

I did not mean personal injury at work,

Higher risk as a driver. In a high risk group for claims when driving.

Oh hahaha, feel a hit of a pratt now haha

That's bad mate :(

I always put my rents down as named drivers on Confused.com and that gives me the cheapest prices.

Thinking im paying £600 on a seat ibiza sport PD130. 21 with 3 years ncb

I'd just tinker with all the settings to see what's throwing your prices up. Its weird for me now as I can get insured on a clio 182 for the same price!

Try and add your one of your parents to the policy as a second driver, it usually reduces the premium (assuming they have no points or accidents). Add them, even if they will never drive the car.

If you live in Preston it's a very high rate area for thefts from vehicles or was when I worked there,so it's considered a hotspot for insurance claims, now if you live in Penwortham ,Bamber Bridge, Leyland etc it's much much cheaper.unless you move the only way I can see is to fit a black box recorder,or ask the insurer about advanced driving cert if you get one will this help.

If your parents are insuring your car with them as the insured and you as the named driver, and you have main use of the car, that would be a false declaration and the car is actually not insured for that use.

If you are the the insured main driver and a parent is a named driver, on the policy how do you get a reduction for this???? Puzzled
