Bodywork repair: what do I do next?

Featured Replies

I've got a 5 inch narrow scratch on a front wheel arch of my Superb II.  The primer's still intact and I've applied 4 coats of genuine 2 pot Skoda touch-up paint (the colour match seems perfect, BTW) and I'm leaving it to harden for a few days.

My problem is that there's conflicting advice, here and on the web in general, as what to do next.  I have at my disposal the pot of unused clear liquid (is that called clearcoat?) from the Skoda paint kit, some 1500 wet/dry paper, T-Cut and Turtle wax.

Do I apply the clearcoat, sand down, T-Cut then polish or do the sanding, then lacquer? Or do I need the clearcoat at all? Or something completely different?

I think a photo is always helpful.

Of you've read up on this as still only have 1500 wet paper and some T-cut you need to have another read mate, and probably some more. ;)

Sounds like be has read but is still seeking advice before fudging it with what he has.

Dear jars,

You seem to know a lot about this so perhaps you could let us have some of your wisdom for the benefit of other readers of this forum (and me).

Dear jars,

Perhaps I should have left out the ;) as you've obviously taken offence. Sorry that wasn't my intention.

I am no god, I do not do this as a job, nor am I that good :giggle: but I do it because I have a passion, I want to do it correctly and to not make it worse. So I spent weeks and weeks reading how to do this myself, so before I even started, I knew the process inside and out and had at my disposal;

I.P.A and degreaser

A.P.C mix

wet and dry 1500 - 3500 (although I don't think I used below 2k or above 3k)

pencil & bigger sanding block (think I used a rubber)

paint kit as you described

tooth picks & a variety of model paint brushes

machine polisher with a variety of pads and polishes

a very bright light

possibly some other small bits

IMHO it sounds like you haven't done enough homework, or are cutting corners (which isn't advisable) as sanding with 1500 wet & dry alone will not work as I reckon it will leave too harsh a mark to remove by hand, especially with just T-Cut.

In short, it would save you a lot of hassle and time to have a professional repaint this piece, and you will avoid making any mistakes that makes this worse :)
If you do choose to do it yourself you need to be sure that you realize that it will probably never look perfect, or as if it never happened without the repaint. Usually it is just best for a person who has no experience in this to just put the paint in the scratch and close it up so it wont get worse and plan on having the piece fixed at a shop at a later time.
But, good luck to you and remember youtube is your friend :)

Thank you both for your advice. No offence taken, jars, I assure you.
