Roof bubbling

Featured Replies

Gave the car a wash this morning as I'm finished work for the Xmas and new year only to find the paint has started to bubble.

Has anyone had this before?

If it's less than 10 years old, take it in for warranty work. :)

Paint warranty is only 2 or 3 years. No way they would say that is due to corrosion (which is 10 year warranty) so no point in going to Skoda.

Exactly what I thought.

What would cause this to happen?

Crap paint, damage? Our Leon has a few similar bubbles on the roof.

I'm properly gutted. The roof was one only panel on my car that was immaculate. Not one mark now I've got this.

If it's micro blistering of the paint, as it appears, then you will have no luck.

But, if it's corrosion, from the inside to out, and the car is within the warranty period, take it back.

I take it that all those bubbles are on the paintwork, and not water droplets?

Yeah it's the paintwork. I thought it was water droplets until I tried to dry them. I doubt it's corrosion.

For Skoda to entertain a corrosion claim it would need to have rusted through from underneath, which is very unlikely unless you have ever tried turning the car into a giant fish tank.

Skoda wouldn't touch it anyway because at some point before I owned the car, it's had a full respray. No idea why, no evidence of a crash, it's hpi clear, all the panels line up nicely. The previous owner must of really loved this car!

I've had it for nearly 3 years now so any body shop that done the work wouldn't be interested now because of the time frame.

Would flat polishing and spraying the area do the trick or am I opening a can of worms?

Do you have the car under covers at all? Seen this happen before when the moister gets trapped. Tbh if its been painted before i would think that the airline wasnt clean and have a water trap so its got into the paint. Was going to ask when it was painted but seen youve had it 3yrs so its strange its suddenly reacted. I think if you flat polish it you may just go through the lacquer and be able to redo it but it depends on where the bubbling has occured from if its the paint layer it will happen again if its clear layer you may get away with it but getting a good finish in one section with just lacquer will be quite hard i think.

It's never had a cover on it since I've owned it. Might as well try and flat polish it. If I make a hash of it the Worst case scenario is it needs a respray. Which it does really!

Two things; if the roof panel needs painting, that is a lot easier than a panel on the side of the car, or the bonnet / boot, as there is no need to blend the colour into another panel.

What about a vinyl wrap, say in black, it may be a cheaper alternative?

Yes I thought it would a great opportunity to either change colour, or Vinyl wrap.

If painted I would go for a normal paint (white perhaps) and not with the metallic clear coat finish to avoid the top peeling/ blistering/ bubbling again..?

I would wrap or change the colour but I'm still in two minds if I'm going to change cars soon.
