Putting ATF Dexron 3 in as gearbox oil?

Featured Replies

I've been looking in our shed as apparently we had some proper oil for my PD130 6 speed but apparently we don't.

I've found some ATF Dexron 3 F/S oil and was wondering if I could use this? Meant to be decent stuff but absolutely unsure if it will be compatible with our gearboxes?

Any ideas before I chuck it in?

Found something that says this:

Advantages / Benefits

• Easiest Shifting - even at low temperatures.

• Protects all metals normally found in gearboxes against corrosion.

• Shorter warm-up - rapid oil circulation ensures excellent gearbox efficiency.

• Excellent Protection against Wear - due to rapid oil circulation after starting.

• Stays in grade even in very severe conditions.

• Lower Maintenance Costs - the long-life characteristic of this ATF allows oil change intervals to be extended.

Cheers!

not unless you want to play guinea pig     ATF= automatic transmission fluid   it'll be like water

proper stuff's not that pricey from TPS. Cheaper than a knackered gearbox anyway.

it does look pretty cool though we use that at work for dumper transmissions and its bright red

Cheers guys, looks like it's a no go then!

I use castrol gear oil. Served me well. Yes halfords special butgood price with a trade card.

Also add active 8 in with all my oils. It works wonders

active 8 is very expensive but is only one use and it works wonders. My last car fiat stilo 1.4 got too 160.000 and never missed a beat.

Castrol manual transmission fluid. Think its 75 -80 or something near. They only sell one lol.

yes its not manufacturer spec. But castrol is a good oil. And my gearbox hasn't ran better in the whole 40k ive done in the car..

Sorry to butt into this thread but its relevant as I'd like to check/replace mine. Is it possible as a DIY job or something very easily undertaken by garages.

Not being mechanically illiterate I'll give it a go if its not too bad.

If you can undo and retighten two plugs you can do it.

You can probably still use it to top up your power steering, so all is not lost.

You do need a special plug socket for these . But when stuck. I found a good set of pliers to be able to do the job. As they are not stupid tight.

Im lucky with mine. For some unknown reason it has differentplugs with aAllen key fittings

If you need the special tool most decent tool shops will have the bit for about £5
