Worn camshaft?

Featured Replies

Would a worn camshaft cause my engine to sound rough with a kind of rattle?

Every other fabia I've compared mine to runs so so so much smoother than mine.

I think the previous owner had starved it of oil. I had to top it up when I bought it and it took about 2.5 - 3 litres to get it above minimum.

Whip cam cover off and check/take photos of the camshaft lobes and post up on here mate

Ok cool. I'll do that. Is it just a case of whipping it off, as you said?

Undo the many bolts and job done? Or do other things need to be removed to get the cover off?

If that easy I'll do it now and post some pics

It's just torx bolts mate. Make sure the gasket is seated properly and still seals ok when you bolt the cam cover back down too else you may need a replacement.

Also check lifter caps for excessive pitting

Thanks for the info mate. I'm going to do this first thing tomorrow morning.

Another symptom is that the car also has a slight misfire when idling... its hard to describe.

PD's are really fussy about their oil, camshaft wear is a symptom of the incorrect oil being used previously if it turns out it is the camshaft.

Have you thought to get the ECU scanned for faults?

Smoking out the back is common too

Could be a duff injector

I have vcds lite, will that be sufficient? which part should i be scanning for faults?

It does smoke a lot. I dont notice it at all though because of the side exit exhaust. But before, it would get covered in black soot at the back. Would a VCDS lite scan show up a faulty injector mate?

It may do, give it a scan and see what comes up, start with that as a first post of call and take it from there

Yep, Lite will do; just click on Auto Scan and see what it coughs up :)

I KNOW I KNOW! i did the scan, and my laptop died whist doing it. Then my neighbour came out and was like "switch your engine off my little girl is asleep, to which i told him where to go because i'm doing diagnostics!

Also, it only scanned 2 things and then stopped and told me that I had to register for VCDS lite and wouldnt continue.

Anyway, the laptop died so i cant get the fault up and i dont want to go out and do another scan.

But it was something like

Power train  data bus - intermitent

or something along those lines. I'll have to re check in the morning.

STFU I iz bizzy doin diagnostiks FFS! :D

Don't need engine running to do a scan lol

+1, any faults are logged in the ECU, you only need the ignition on :)

oh sweet. haha, i thought because we were scanning the injectors, it would only work if the engine was running to see if they were faulty.

I'll charge the laptop and get back out there! :)

With the vcds lite you can't do an auto scan you need to access each menu individually and then scan
