Rear suspension VRS feeling "loose"

Featured Replies

When going round corners with potholes, drain covers etc in the road, as the rear wheels go over these holes, the back end feels like it wants to "step out" for a moment. Feels a bit loose. I'm suspecting bushes, though there's nothing obvious from a quick visual inspection. Trouble is, there's so many bushes back there.

Any idea what part of the suspension might be worn? Possibly dampers I suppose too. Tyre pressure doesn't seem to make a difference btw.

I'm in the same boat so eagerly await an informed response.

Ditto.....I'm in the process of upgrading my suspension to a Bilstein B12 eibach pro kit, with new droplinks and front & rear Powerflex anti roll bar bushes. By the time I've had them all fitted you will probably have had your answer though. A not very cost effective way to cure it but well worth the modification!

Mines similar but has the feeling of being blown around towards the rear. Mines had new rear arms/bushes and new coilovers, plus four wheel geometry setup.

It's strange because it didn't feel this way after 125k on the original shocks and rear arms.

4 wheel alignment sorted mine when I had the same issue.

I'm not getting any saw-toothing on the rear tyres, so was assuming the alignment to be ok. From what I've read, it's either alignment issues or dead shocks. Might just fit a new pair of shocks as it's not a hard job.

I had one of the shocks off the other week to replace the completely disintegrated bump stop. Not having a new shock to compare the old one with though, it was difficult to determine whether the old shock was goosed. Once compressed, how quickly should the damper rod come out again (this is off the car, obviously). The damper rod only came out very slowly - is this normal??

I'd say worn/perished bushes over dampers. They can look fine, alignment can appear to be fine as well even with duff bushes. Essentially they can go soft/brittle, so when under load they flex more than they should. My old Octavia was on its original springs and dampers after 100K miles, and they were still fine.

Any bushes in particular I should be looking at? The multi-link suspension seems to have loads!

I'd start by getting the bushes for the suspension arms checked first, where they attach to the subframe. These are the ones that tend to go first.

I didn't have sawtoothing either, I just got rear tyres wearing quicker than fronts but evenly

Yep,mine as well, had it done two weeks ago.
