VRS DSG or manual?

Featured Replies

hi there guys and gals first post so be gentle   lol

Im in the market for a vrs estate and not sure which to go for I`m looking to spend about 12k so hopefully get one on a 10 reg the only concerns i have are

1 dsg or manual

2 colour i know i know!!! cant decide on either blue or silver but the main question is the gearbox one, I will go and drive them both of course but any feedback and help would be appreciated my only thoughts with the DSG box is does the novelty wear of after a while and do you just stick it in `D`?

thanks in advance

If you go for the DSG you will find the Yellow ones are faster than the Blue ones         actually the yellow Manuals are faster as well

  • Rubbish. I'll look forward to the day you get out dragged at the lights by an identical vRS with DSG (it's quicker than the manual in real life).....you'll be straight down the dealer looking to p/x

DSG every time

It's actually better than sliced bread

My opinion of course

Depends if were talking petrol or diesel. Doesnt work so well with diesel in my opinion, a good match for the petrol.

Only issue is it doesnt really improve performance and it worsens fuel economy and emissions. My vote would be manual for either car purely on economic grounds.

DSG every time just remember to get dsg oil change at 40.000 miles and all will be fine . great gearbox

sorry it will be a petrol !!!! Is there a big difference in economy between the two? i know the road tax is £20 cheaper on the manual according to DVLA being £200 against £220 I`m looking at getting one with the multi function wheel and paddles

DSG , :-)

I'm a fan.. Both My cars are auto.....All my last cars (last 8 years now and I've had a few lol).

I drive auto at work.....

With today's modern technology auto boxes are great.

A test drive is ok, but it's still a novelty... It gets better when you are used to it.

I would not want to go back to a manual nowadays, relaxed and effortless.... But with the option for a bit of sporty play if you want it.

DSG is great. Its fine with the diesel as well IMHO. I wouldn't want to go back to a manual car now for my every day driving.

Works just a well with the diesel. Usual advice is to drive both - manual and DSG and petrol and diesel and see which you like best and which fits the £ best.

+1 for DSG particularly in the petrol. Loses about 2-3 mpg for dsg. But very worth it and no one buys a vrs petrol for efficiency. Smooth as you like and paddles or S for fun.

I've just bought an 09 Octavia diesel estate with the DSG. I can honestly say I don't think I will ever buy another manual car.

It's just effortless and slam your foot down and it takes off. If you ever spend much time stuck in traffic the DSG is the answer, no more up and down on the clutch.

As for the economy the DSG is slightly worse than a manual but I mean slightly.

I agree. I have at DTUK box fitted to mine (220bhp approx). Put your foot down and it flies, its an effortless pleasurable drive. I still get 50+ mpg at motorway speeds with the DSG box which is really good for an auto.

Working in a garage I do see the dsg coming in with problems and seem to be ££££ to fix.Im sure when they are still fresh and new they are great but its what happens as they get older and they need repaired. We've had 3 in the last 6 months that have needed major work ranging from 37k miles to 90k.Maybe as I only see them when they give bother it effects my view of them as I'm sure for every one that brakes 100 are fine.

I've drive some that are superb even at slow speed and some that would put you off for life so definitely drive one first.

Good luck. As ever us vRS owners are unanimous in having different opions!

I haven't driven one so can't offer any first hand experience, though my dealer does recon the dsg is better suited to the petrol. What I can say though is the manual 6 speed box is a delight, one of the best I've used. Try both to see which you prefer before deciding as dsgs are a bit marmite. I'd take into consideration what your typical journey is like and how much this will affect your choice. E.g. If you do loads of stop start motoring in urban or on the motorway dsg will be useful. Enjoy your test drives and let us know which you chose and why.

Personally, I prefer to change gear myself and find that the DSG dilutes the experience somewhat. Be great around town in traffic but luckily I live in the West Country so not really a problem.

Not huge but my diesel isnt that efonomical unless taken on a long runnand i put that partly down to the DSG beijg less efficient.

All facelift vRS DSG cars come with paddles and MFSW by the way.

I find mine is good if you just want to trundle about but it spoils the fun in the diesel when really pressing on. Its also not particularly smooth at low speeds in 1st and 2nd, also makes slow manouvers on inclines difficult as it has a tendancy to lurch and give nothing then everything, particularly in reverse, its worse when cold too.

My view.....they are good but if you can handle changing gears yourself the manuals make for a better and more rewarding drive overall. Modern autos are now also capable of DSG speed gearchanges without the power losses and are much smoother than DSG (ZF 8 speed fitted to BMW's main example).....I do actually think at some point VAG might relent and start fitting modern autos in place of DSG boxes at some point in the future, the technology has possibly had its day.

For info Ive had a 7 speed dry clutch box on a petrol Fabia vRS and the 6 speed wet box (as fitted to both petrol and diesel Octy vRS) on a diesel vRS Blackline.

A drive is the only way to answer the question for sure, but for what its worth I love my VRS DSG (CR). Mine is quick and smooth, doesn't have the 'lurching' problem described above - I can reverse smoothly, drive slowly and pull away at slower speeds smoothly - and while it may well lose out on economy to a manual, I'm still averaging late-40's MPG and see 51MPG on a very regular basis.

I tend to leave it in 'D' and only use the paddles rarely, usually to setup an overtake (select the right gear, wait for the right moment and off you fly...). It makes daily driving much easier, much less stressful and a joy to live with :)

I drive both quite regularly and I can assure you that in the petrol the DSG is like silk, in the diesel it is slightly laggy and slowing down at junctions/roundabouts often struggles.

You have to decide, if a motorway user go for DSG diesel if do a lot of town driving for pure smoothness go petrol, there is a massive difference. Drive the two back to back and you will feel the car that the gearbox was set up for.

Not in my experience.

I say DSG all the way....it's brilliant.

DSG every time. Just stick it in D and watch as it changes gear at exactly the right time.

You can play with tip for the first few days, then just let it do what it does best.

I love the fact that it changes down as well and brings the revs up to match..

The only slight criticism I have with the DSG is that around town I think It needs to hold the gears without changing up. Around 30 mph the box is in 6th. I think it should be in 4th.

So around town I stick it in +/- and use the paddles to change up and let the box change down on it's own.

I would also like the +/-  when using the gear lever to change to be the other way round

i.e.:-  forward to go down the box and back to go up.       Just my opinion

Exactly what I have!! See my sig. You will love it!

The DSG is fantastic. Previously had one in a Golf V GTI too. Brilliant gearbox. Make sure you try sports mode too.

Would love to hear your feedback.

Just realized I feel the same - it would be more like slipping into third gear on an old-school manual box.

Manual always and forget these cr@ppy auto DGS tiptrornic mechatronic, complicated stuff. 6 gears Mnual enjoy lfie, change when u want, and not a dumb computer.

Unless your old and tired for manual ;)
