Unlocking Iphone 4

Featured Replies

Does anyone have any contacts to allow unlocking of the Iphone to any network provider permanently ? Been quoted silly money locally and going down the SAM route isnt really an option :(

Many thanks,

Joel

Thank you but it is only possible if you are on certain basebands which most iphone4 and over users will be on :(

May just have to folk out the cash by going to O2

iphones can only be unlocked by the network they were originally on, I paid £25 to have an EE iPhone 4 unlocked to any network. A permanent unlock has to be done by Apples servers, you contact the provider who in turn contact Apple to have the device unlocked. The device is then unlocked forever when you next sync or  restore with iTunes. Mine went through in 3 days, no problem at all. Any other method is not permanent and could be lost at any time.

Ouch

£25 is not so bad if it gives you 100% flexibility, just the phone provider has you by the short and curlies if they don't want to do it.

They can't refuse IIRC. So long as you're out of contract.

In contract not so sure as they pick and choose when a phone is and isn't tied to your contract as it suits them - usually when a handset goes faulty

TMobile wanted about £25 to unlock my S2 and the best price from a reputable online unlocker is about £18 so not that bad a deal to get it officially unlocked without the risk of it defaulting back as mannyo has said.

What network is it locked to, and are you the original owner?

Not sure it's worth paying much to unlock a relatively old handset, and as Manny says, the only guaranteed way is through the network.

When i upgraded i spoke to an O2 guru online i explained my situation, that id upgraded the day before and still had my iphone 4s. He checked my account and 3 hours later it was unlocked.

Sometimes you get a good person who'll do this. Others wont.

Does an iPhone which has been unlocked then remain unlocked or does it lock to the next network it is used on?

Remains unlocked

If you pop a different network's SIM in, you'll need to connect it to iTunes again, but that's it.

  • 3 weeks later...

I unlocked both mine and my mrs' iPhones from o2. It was done free by o2 on both occassions.... As long as it's out of contract they do it for free and it's all done online..... Or it was the other year when i did ours. ;)

Cheers
